2022 Federal Capital Territory Local Elections
Local elections in the Federal Capital Territory (Nigeria), Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria were held on 12 February 2022. The three-year tenure of the Six Chairmen and 62 Councillors is set to expire in May 2022. Federal Capital Territory (Nigeria)
The Federal Capital Territory, commonly known as the FCT, is a federal territory in central Nigeria. Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria, is located in this territory. The FCT was formed in 1976 from parts of the states of old Kaduna State, Kaduna, Kwara State, Kwara, Niger State, Niger, and Plateau State, Plateau states, with the bulk of land mass carved out of Niger state. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was established in 1998 and is the electoral body which oversees elections in Nigeria. History Regulation and administration of elections The administration of democratic elections in Nigeria dates back to the period before Independence when the Electoral Commission of Nigeria(ECN) was inaugurated in 1958 to conduct the 1959 federal elections. Prior to 1958, regional laws and government regulated and conducted elections. ECN was headed by an expatriate, Ronald Edward Wraith and four Nigerian members representing each region and the Federal Capital Territory of Lagos. The Federal Electoral Commission (FEC), established in 1960 conducted the immediate post-independence federal and regional elections of 1964 and 1965.
