2022 Dublin University By-election
A by-election was held for the Seanad Éireann Dublin University constituency in Ireland in March 2022. Ballot papers were issued on 25 February and polls closed at 11 a.m. on 30 March 2022. The election was won by former army officer and whistleblower Tom Clonan. Background The vacancy was caused by the election of Labour's Ivana Bacik to Dáil Éireann on 8 July 2021 at a by-election in Dublin Bay South. On 10 November 2021, the Seanad passed a motion calling on the clerk of the Seanad to send notice to the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage of the vacancy. The minister was required to make the order for a by-election within six months of this notice. A by-election, also known as a special election in the United States and the Philippines, a bye-election in Ireland, a bypoll in India, or a Zimni election (Urdu: ضمنی انتخاب, supplementary election) in Pakistan, is an election used to fill an office that has become vacant between general elections. A vacancy may arise as a result of an incumbent dying or resigning, or when the incumbent becomes ineligible to continue in office (because of a recall, election or appointment to a prohibited dual mandate, criminal conviction, or failure to maintain a minimum attendance), or when an election is invalidated by voting irregularities. ''The University Times'' (often abbreviated as ''UT'' or ''the UT'') is a student newspaper. Published from Trinity College Dublin, it is financially supported by Trinity College Dublin Students' Union but maintains a mutually agreed policy of editorial independence. In 2017, it won the award for best all-around non-daily student newspaper in the world, as judged by the US-based Society of Professional Journalists. In 2015, the newspaper's website had over one million unique readers for the first time. Dublin is a constituency of the European Parliament in Ireland. It elects 4 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) using proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (STV). History and boundaries The constituency was created in 1979 for the first direct elections to the European Parliament. From 1979 to 1994, it comprised County Dublin and the city of Dublin. Since 1994 it comprises the same area redefined as the counties of Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown, Fingal, South Dublin and the city of Dublin. From 1979 to 2004, it elected 4 MEPs; this was reduced to 3 for the 2009 election. Patricia McKenna
Patricia McKenna (born 13 March 1957) is an Irish Independent and former Green Party politician. She served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Dublin constituency from 1994 to 2004. She is a practising barrister having been called to the Bar in 2016. Background A native of Castleshane, a small village in County Monaghan. McKenna was formerly a member of the Green Party. She became the first Green Party candidate in Ireland to be elected to the European Parliament. The ''Leinster Leader'' is a newspaper published in Naas, County Kildare, Ireland. Johnston Press bought the Leinster Leader Group in 2005. The Green Party ( ga, Comhaontas Glas, , Green Alliance) is a green political party that operates in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. As other like-minded Green parties, it has eco-socialist/green left and more moderate factions. It holds a pro-European stance. Hazel Chu
Hazel Chu (born 3 November 1980) is an Irish Green Party politician who has been a member of Dublin City Council since May 2019. She was elected Cathaoirleach (Chairperson) of the Irish Green Party in December 2019, and was succeeded by Senator Pauline O'Reilly in December 2021. She was the first Irish-born person of Chinese descent elected to political office on the island of Ireland. Maureen Gaffney
Maureen Gaffney (born 1947) is an Irish clinical psychologist, broadcaster, writer and columnist. Biography Gaffney was born in 1947 in Midleton, County Cork. Educated there in St Mary's High School the Presentation Convent, she was the first in her family to go to university and she graduated with a BA in Psychology from the University College Cork. Gaffney got a scholarship in 1974 which allowed her to get her masters in Behavioural Sciences from the University of Chicago. She returned to Ireland to gain her PhD from Trinity College Dublin. Gaffney spent twenty years working for the Eastern Health Board before taking on writing columns and beginning a radio career.
