2021 Puntland Municipal Elections
Municipal elections were held in Puntland, a state of Somalia, on October 25, 2021, with the preliminary elections in Qardho, Eyl and Ufayn electing councils for these three districts ahead of state-wide local council elections expected to take place in early 2022. The election was the first one under the principle of one man, one vote to be held in Somalia since 1969 and the state since its formation in 1998. Candidates in district elections run and are nominated by List of political parties in Somalia, political parties. The mayor and Districts of Somalia, District Council are then selected internally by the Councils at the first special sitting of the new legislative session. Results The Transitional Puntland Electoral Commission (TPEC) successfully concluded elections in three districts — Qardho, Eyl, and Ufeyn on October 26. List Of Political Parties In Somalia
This article lists political parties in Somalia. In 2017 an independent electoral commission was inaugurated with a mandate to oversee the process of registration of political parties in the country, according to Article 47 of the Federal Provisional Constitution which provides for an electoral system. The system guarantees participation of every individual who subscribes to a political party. NIEC has registered over 100 political parties, most of which still operate from outside the country for security reasons. In October 2019 six parties joined together to form the Forum for National Parties, an alliance founded by former president Sharif Sheikh Ahmed which has come together to address the political and security issues faced by Somalia. Ufeyn is a district in the northeastern Bari region of Somalia.
