2021 Ivorian Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Ivory Coast on 6 March 2021. The previous elections, held in 2016, saw the presidential coalition (the Rally of Houphouëtists for Democracy and Peace, composed of the Rally of the Republicans, the Democratic Party of Ivory Coast – African Democratic Rally, and some minor parties) win more than the half the seats in the National Assembly. Electoral system The National Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral parliament. Of its 255 members, 169 are elected in single-member constituencies by first-past-the-post voting and the remaining 86 are elected from 36 constituencies of between two and six seats by general ticket voting, with the list of candidates that receives the most votes winning all seats to be filled. Following a decree in November 2020, 30% of the total candidates from each party must be women. The new constitution, which was approved in a referendum in October, reduced the term for the 255 members of the National Assembly from five to four years. A single-member district is an electoral district represented by a single officeholder. It contrasts with a multi-member district, which is represented by multiple officeholders. People's Socialist Union
The People's Socialist Union (french: Union Socialiste du Peuple) is an Côte d'Ivoire, Ivorian political party based in London. History The People's Socialist Union (USP) was founded in 1996. The general secretary of USP was Henri Tohou, who on 19 February 1990, initiated and led a small group of students from Yopougon University (Abidjan). It was the first significant Ivorian students' uprising against President Félix Houphouët-Boigny's regime. Houphouët-Boigny headed one of the most brutal France, French-sponsored dictatorships in Africa. Along with other students, they targeted the MEECI, the former national students' movement from which the ruling party drew its young supporters. Hamed Bakayoko (8 March 1965 – 10 March 2021) was an Ivorian politician who served as Prime Minister of Côte d'Ivoire from 8 July 2020 until his death on 10 March 2021. He had previously served as the country's Minister of New Technologies, Information and Communication, Minister of the Interior and Minister of Defense. Patrick Achi (born 17 November 1955) is an Ivorian politician who serves as Prime Minister of Ivory Coast since March 2021. A member of the Rally of the Republicans, he studied at Supélec and Stanford University and specialises in engineering and infrastructure. He has also worked as the government spokesman for President Alassane Ouattara. Early life and education Achi, born in Paris to an Ivorian father (from the Attié tribe located in the South region) and a French Breton mother. He was educated in France and the United States. The Ivorian Popular Front (french: Front populaire ivoirien; abbr. FPI) is a centre-left, democratic socialist and social democratic political party in Ivory Coast. FPI was founded in exile in 1982 by history professor Laurent Gbagbo, Aboudramane Sangaré, and other allies during the one-party rule of President Félix Houphouët-Boigny. Politically inspired by the French Socialist Party, the FPI was until 2011 a full member of the Socialist International (SI). General Ticket
The general ticket, also known as party block voting (PBV) or ticket voting, is a type of block voting in which voters opt for a party, or a team's set list of candidates, and the highest-polling party/team becomes the winner. Unless specifically altered, this electoral system (''at-large'' voting) results in the victorious political party receiving ''100%'' of the seats.
