2021 Evros Floods
During the period of 12 January and February 2021, the rivers Erythropotamos and Evros (Greek: Έβρος) also known as Maritsa (Bulgarian: Марица, Turkish: Meriç) overflowed twice because of heavy rainstorms resulting in severe floods of the areas around the rivers, that led to 1 death and serious damages to private and public property. The floods were described by the media and residents as "one of the biggest disasters the area has ever faced". Residents of the area were forced to abandon their cars and homes because of the rising, powerful floodwaters. The residents of the southern area of the village Polia were forced to evacuate because of a broken embankment in the area, and were taken by a bus to a hotel in Didymoteicho temporarily, to prevent injuries and deaths. Dadia
Dadia (Greek: Δαδιά) is a village in the northwestern part of the Evros (regional unit), Evros regional unit, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Greece. Dadia is in the municipality of Soufli. Its population in 2011 was 533 for the village and 546 for the community, including the village Kotronia. It is located southwest of Soufli and north of Feres, Evros, Feres. The name originates from a resinous pine wood which in the past was used for lighting. Tychero
Tycheró ( el, Τυχερό, ) is a town and a former municipality in the Evros regional unit, East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Soufli, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 220.411 km2. Population 4,010 (2011). Tychero is situated near the river Evros, which forms the border with Turkey here. History Under Ottoman rule Tychero was known as ''Bıdıklı'' (Greek: Μπίντικλι). After the Balkan Wars (1912-1913) it became part of Bulgaria, and it became part of Greece in 1920. It was renamed to ''Tychio'', which was changed to the current name Tychero in 1953. Feres, Evros
Feres ( el, Φέρες) is a town and a former municipality in the Evros regional unit, East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Alexandroupoli, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 411.160 km2. Population 8,551 (2011). Feres is linked with the GR-2 or the Egnatia Odos (Alexandroupoli - Kavala - Thessaloniki - Kozani - Igoumenitsa) and the GR-51 (Alexandroupoli - Orestiada - Ormenio. Orestiada
Orestiada ( el, Ορεστιάδα, formerly , ''Nea Orestiás''), is the northeasternmost, northernmost and newest city of Greece and the second largest town of the Evros regional unit of Thrace. Founded by Greek refugees from Edirne after the Treaty of Lausanne when the population exchange occurred between Turkey and Greece, in which the river Evros became the new border between the two countries.
