2021 Cedar Rapids Mayoral Election
The 2021 Cedar Rapids mayoral election was held of November 2, 2021, with a subsequent runoff election held on November 30, 2021. The first round of the election futured three major candidates. Candidate Tiffany O'Donnell strongly led the first round, with candidate Amara Andrews finishing in second place. Incumbent mayor Brad Hart failed to advance to the runoff, narrowly finishing behind Andrews. In the runoff election, O'Donnell handily won the election, winning more than twice as many votes as Andrews. Although Cedar Rapids municipal elections are officially nonpartisan on the ballot, candidates could still state their political affiliation on filings or self-identify with a party. Two-round System
The two-round system (TRS), also known as runoff voting, second ballot, or ballotage, is a voting method used to elect a single candidate, where voters cast a single vote for their preferred candidate. It generally ensures a majoritarian result, not a simple plurality result as under First past the post. Brad Hart
Bradley G. Hart is an American attorney and politician who served as the mayor of Cedar Rapids, Iowa from 2018 to 2022. As the role of mayor is a part-time position, Hart continued to work as a business lawyer at Bradley & Riley during his term. Education Hart earned his bachelor's degree from Iowa State University, followed by a Juris Doctor from the South Texas College of Law (then known as the "Houston College of Law"). Career After graduating from law school, Hart began his career in Houston, Texas before relocating to Iowa to work at Bradley & Riley, where he specializes in corporate mergers and business law. In the November 2017 Mayoral election, Hart competed against city councilor, Monica Vernon. Cedar Rapids () is the second-largest city in Iowa, United States and is the county seat of Linn County. The city lies on both banks of the Cedar River, north of Iowa City and northeast of Des Moines, the state's capital and largest city.
