2020–21 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Women's Basketball Team
The 2020–21 Notre Dame Fighting Irish women's basketball team represented the University of Notre Dame during the 2020–21 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Fighting Irish were led by first year head coach Niele Ivey and played their home games at Purcell Pavilion as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Fighting Irish finished the season 10–10 and 8–7 in ACC play to finish in sixth place. In the ACC tournament, they lost to Clemson in the Second Round. They were not invited to the NCAA tournament or the WNIT. Previous season The Fighting Irish finished the 2019–20 season at 13–18 and 8–10 in ACC play to finish in a tie for ninth place. Niele Ivey
Niele Deirdre Jamillah Viveca Ivey (born September 24, 1977) is an American college basketball coach and the current head coach for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish women's basketball team. She is a former Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) player for the Indiana Fever, Detroit Shock, and Phoenix Mercury. Prior to her move to the NCAA in August 2019, she was an assistant coach for the University of Notre Dame women's basketball team, where she had played in college. She was an All-American point guard and became the 17th player in school history to record over 1,000 career points. She received the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award presented for the nation's top player under 5'8" in 2001. She would go on to lead the Irish women to their first NCAA Championship in 2001, in her hometown of St. Louis as a fifth-year senior. 2020 Women's National Invitation Tournament
The 2020 Women's National Invitation Tournament was to be an annual single-elimination tournament of 64 NCAA Division I basketball teams that were not selected to participate in the 2020 Women's NCAA tournament. The tournament committee was to announce the 64-team field on March 16, following the selection of the NCAA Tournament field. The tournament was set to begin on March 18, 2020, and end on April 4, 2020, with the championship game televised on the CBS Sports Network. As with all tournaments, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, games were to be held behind closed doors. On March 12, 2020, the NCAA canceled the tournament.
