2020 Palauan General Election
General elections were held in Palau on 3 November 2020 to elect a President and the National Congress. Electoral system The President of Palau is elected using the two-round system. The 13 members of the Senate are elected from a single nationwide constituency by block voting, with each voter having 13 votes to cast. The 16 members of the House of Delegates are elected in single-member constituencies based on the states using first-past-the-post voting. Results President The primary round was held on 22 September 2020 with four candidates. The incumbent president, Thomas Remengesau Jr., was ineligible to stand again having reached his term limit. Former presidential candidate (and brother-in-law of the incumbent) Surangel Whipps Jr. took first place in the primary, while Vice President Raynold Oilouch placed second to qualify for the second round of the presidential election. First-past-the-post Voting
In a first-past-the-post electoral system (FPTP or FPP), formally called single-member plurality voting (SMP) when used in single-member districts or informally choose-one voting in contrast to ranked voting, or score voting, voters cast their vote for a candidate of their choice, and the candidate who receives the most votes wins even if the top candidate gets less than 50%, which can happen when there are more than two popular candidates. As a winner-take-all method, FPTP often produces disproportional results (when electing members of an assembly, such as a parliament) in the sense that political parties do not get representation according to their share of the popular vote.
