Thialf
Thialf is an ice arena in Heerenveen, Netherlands. Thialf consists of the Thialf-hal (a 12,500-capacity speed skating venue) and the Elfstedenhal (a 2,500-capacity ice hockey venue). Thialf is used for long track speed skating, short track speed skating, ice hockey, figure skating, ice speedway, and non-sporting events. The outdoor rink was opened in 1967, and the indoor stadium was opened in 1986. Several world records have been set in the indoor stadium. Annually, Thialf hosts two Speed Skating World Cup events. Jan de Jong was the ice rink master at Thialf for many years. History Thialf is named after Thialfi, a character in Norse mythology, who was Thor's servant and had to race a giant. Construction on the artificial outdoor ice rink was started in 1966, and it was opened on 14 October 1967 by Princess Christina of the Netherlands. Aleksandr Rumyantsev
Alexander Vadimovich Rumyantsev (russian: Александр Вадимович Румянцев; born 5 December 1986) is a Russian speed skater. Career Rumyantsev competed at the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics for Russia. In 2010, he was disqualified in the 5000 metres, and was 13th in the 10000 metres. In 2014, he finished 11th in the 5000 metres. He was also a part of the Russian team pursuit squad, losing to South Korea in the quarter-finals, then losing to Norway in final C, finishing 6th. As of September 2014, Rumyantsev's best performance at the World Single Distance Speed Skating Championships is 6th, in the 2011 team pursuit. His best individual finish is 9th, in the 2013 10000 m. His best finish at the World Allround Speed Skating Championships is 22nd, in 2009. Rumyantsev made his World Cup debut in December 2007. Håvard Bøkko
Håvard Bøkko (; born 2 February 1987) is a Norwegian former speed skater, and the premier skater from his country since 2008, with 32 national championships and thirteen international medals. He had junior results similar to those of Sven Kramer, Gianni Romme and Eric Heiden from the early 1980s before the clap skate. He is the older brother of Hege Bøkko. Speed skating career In 2006, Bøkko was the Junior World Champion, winning the three longest distances. In the European Speedskating Championships he won the bronze in 2006, was no. 4 in 2007, and caught the silver in 2008 and 2009 (on both occasions trailing Sven Kramer). Bart Swings (born 12 February 1991) is a Belgian long track speed skater and inline speed skater. He is the 2022 Olympic champion on the speed skating mass start. Swings won Belgium's first gold medal in 74 years and is the first Belgian athlete ever to have won two medals in the Winter Olympics. Sverre Lunde Pedersen (; born 17 July 1992) is a Norwegian speed skater. He is the son of former speed-skater Jarle Pedersen. Career He is a two-time World Junior Champion and represents the club Fana Idrettslag. In 2011 he was 6th in the European Championships in Collalbo and 14th in the World Championships in Calgary. Heerenveen
Heerenveen (, fry, It Hearrenfean ) is a town and municipality in the province of Friesland (Fryslân), in the Northern Netherlands. In 2021, the town had a population of 29,790 (1 January) while the municipality had a population 50,859 (1 July). History The town was established in 1551 by three lords as a location for the purpose of digging peat which was used for fuel, hence the name (''heer'' is "lord", ''veen'' is "peat").
