2019–20 Asia League Ice Hockey Season
The 2019–20 Asia League Ice Hockey season was the seventeenth season of Asia League Ice Hockey. PSK Sakhalin and Anyang Halla were named joint champions after the league cancelled the Finals due to concerns from the COVID-19 pandemic. League business Team changes During the 2018–19 season, the Nippon Paper Industries Company announced that they would shut down the Nippon Paper Cranes at the conclusion of the season. During the off-season, the league approved the East Hokkaido Cranes as their replacement. Asia League Ice Hockey
Asia League Ice Hockey ( ja, アジアリーグアイスホッケー; ko, 아시아리그 아이스하키) or ALIH (AL) is an association which operates a professional ice hockey league based in East Asia, with teams from Japan, South Korea, and formerly Russia. The league is headquartered in Japan. At the end of the playoffs every year the winner is awarded the Championship Trophy. The league was formed in 2003 due to declining popularity in the Japan Ice Hockey League and the folding of the Korean Ice Hockey League. It was formed with the goal of promoting hockey and developing players' skills. The league initially comprised five teams in two countries. It expanded to highs of four countries (2004–05 season) and nine teams (2005–06 season) and it comprised eight teams from three countries in the 2013–14 season. The East Hokkaido Cranes ( ja, ひがし北海道クレインズ Higashi Hokkaidō kureinzu) are a professional ice hockey team based in Kushiro, Hokkaido, Kushiro, Japan. They are a members of the Asia League Ice Hockey and play their home games at the Kushiro Ice Arena. History The East Hokkaido Cranes formed in April 2019, as a Phoenix club (sports), phoenix club following the demise of the Nippon Paper Cranes franchise. The Paper Cranes had previously existed for 70 years; however, their owners, Nippon Paper Industries, announced in December 2018 that the team would be put up for sale as a result of corporate streamlining and declining revenues. Tohoku Free Blades
The are an Asia League Ice Hockey team based in Hachinohe, Aomori, Japan. Community contributions The team has a number of community programs it runs under the mantra of "Team Social Responsibility". The team engages in youth oriented activities like running skating schools, working with high-school teams, visiting schools to interact with kids, and other kinds of junior hockey workshops. The team also attends various festivals and events in the communities in which they play. Arena The team plays mainly out of several rinks, including Niida Indoor Rink in Hachinohe City. Red Eagles Hokkaido (レッドイーグルス北海道) are a professional ice hockey team based in Tomakomai city on Hokkaidō, Japan. They are members of the Asia League Ice Hockey. Nippon Paper Cranes
The were an Asia League Ice Hockey team based in Kushiro City in Hokkaidō, Japan. History The club was founded as Jūjō Paper Kushiro Ice Hockey Club in 1949. They adopted the new name Nippon Paper Cranes in 1993 when Jūjō Paper and Sanyō Kokusaku Pulp merged to form Nippon Paper. They won the inaugural Asia League Ice Hockey title in the 2003–04 season, and have won it four times overall. They also have won the All Japan Ice hockey Championship seven times.
