2019 Northeast Conference Women's Basketball Tournament
The 2019 Northeast Conference women's basketball tournament is the concluding event of the 2018–19 season of the Northeast Conference (NEC), held from March 11–17, 2019. Unlike most NCAA Division I basketball conference tournaments, the NEC tournament does not include all of the league's teams. The tournament instead features only the top eight teams from regular-season NEC play. Robert Morris won the conference tournament championship game over the St. Francis (PA), 65–54. Robert Morris Colonials Women's Basketball
The Robert Morris Colonials women's basketball team is the basketball team that represents Robert Morris University in Moon Township, Pennsylvania, United States. The school's team currently competes in the Horizon League. Program History Robert Morris began its women's basketball program in 1970, and rattled off 11 straight winning seasons from 1978–79 to 1988–89. Under RMU Athletic Hall of Fame head coach Dan Swalga, the Colonials achieved their first 20-win season in 1981–82 at 20–8, won the Pennwood West tournament after a 23-5 campaign in 1983–84, and captured their first ECAC Metro (now Northeast Conference) Tournament championship in 1988. Swalga led RMU to a second NEC tournament title in 1991, but the program then fell into a 16-season championship drought. After winning just seven games over a three-season span, the Colonials hired Sal Buscaglia from Manhattan to turn around the program. Charlie Buscaglia
Charlie Buscaglia (born November 26, 1979) is an American college basketball coach and the former head coach of the Robert Morris Colonials women's basketball program. Before he succeeded his father, Sal, as head coach following the 2015-16 season, Buscaglia spent 13 years on the Colonials' coaching staff and previously assisted at his alma mater, Manhattan College. Coaching career While enrolled at Manhattan College, Manhattan, Buscaglia spent five seasons as an assistant under his father and was a part of the Jaspers' 2003 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championship and 2003 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament, NCAA tournament team. He then moved onto Robert Morris University, Robert Morris prior to the 2003-04 season, spending five seasons as an assistant coach before being promoted to associate head coach in 2008-09. The Northeast Conference women's basketball tournament is the conference championship tournament in women's basketball for the Northeast Conference. It is a single-elimination tournament that in its most recent 2024 edition involved 8 of the 9 then-current league schools, and seeding is based on regular-season records with head-to-head match-up as a tie-breaker. With the NEC dropping to 8 members in the 2024–25 season following the departure of Merrimack and Sacred Heart, plus the addition of Chicago State, the tournament will presumably include all members for the immediate future. The tournament has been held since 1986, although the winner has only received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA women's basketball tournament since 1994. The Northeast Conference (NEC) is a collegiate athletic conference whose schools are members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The 2019 Northeast Conference men's basketball tournament was the postseason men's basketball tournament for the Northeast Conference for the 2018–19 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. All tournament games are played at the home arena of the highest seed. The tournament took place March 6 through March 12, 2019.
