Legislative elections were held in New Caledonia on 12 May 2019. Electoral system Voters elect 76 members to the assemblies of the three provinces of New Caledonia. 2014 New Caledonian Legislative Election
Legislative elections were held in New Caledonia on 11 May 2014. The result was a victory for the three anti-independence parties (Caledonia Together, The Rally–UMP, Front for Unity and Union for Caledonia in France), which together won 29 of the 54 seats (48.85% of the votes, 53.7% of the seats) in the Congress of New Caledonia. Electoral system Voters elected 87 members to the assemblies of the Administrative divisions of New Caledonia, three provinces of New Caledonia. In turn, 54 also become members of the Congress. Voting was restricted to people on the Special Roll, which excluded people who moved to New Caledonia after 1988. A total of 17 parties registered to contest the elections. Kanak Socialist Liberation
The Kanak Socialist Liberation (french: link=no, Libération Kanak Socialiste, LKS) is a Kanak pro-independence and socialist political party in New Caledonia. History The LKS was founded by a split in the Party of Kanak Liberation (Palika) in 1981. The most radical members of Palika, which had been the base of the party since its creation, walked out criticizing the Palika's increasing moderation and increasing links with the metropolitan French Socialist Party (PS). Led by Nidoïsh Naisseline, a Marxist, it also refused to support Rock Pidjot of the Caledonian Union in the 1981 elections. However, the LKS moderated and it did not participate in the FLNKS-led electoral boycotts in the 1980s. In the 1990s, the party even started co-operating with the anti-independence Rally for Caledonia in the Republic (RPCR) in the Loyalty Islands. Oceanian Awakening
Oceanian Awakening (, EO) is a political party in New Caledonia founded in March 2019. History The EO was founded in 2019 to compete in the 2019 New Caledonian legislative election. The aim as a party is to defend the interests of minority Wallisian residents and their descendants in New Caledonia. In the 1950s, a number of young workers from the Wallis and Futuna islands emigrated to New Caledonia in search of better economic opportunities and due to tense political and clan related violence. However, the EO considers the Wallis and Futuna community unrepresented in New Caledonia. Ideologically, the party considers itself to be a centrist, pro-multi-ethnic party that supports non-violence.
