2019 European Parliament Election In Latvia
An election of the delegation from Latvia to the European Parliament was held on 25 May 2019. CVK.LV The previous elections were held in 2014. The election uses the Sainte-Laguë method, which is weighted against the larger parties. That explains why, according to the results of one opinion poll, parties with 6% of the vote would be allocated one seat each, while a party with 17% of the vote would also be allocated only one seat. European Parliament
The European Parliament (EP) is one of the legislative bodies of the European Union and one of its seven institutions. Together with the Council of the European Union (known as the Council and informally as the Council of Ministers), it adopts European legislation, following a proposal by the European Commission. The Progressives ( lv, Progresīvie, ) is a social-democratic and progressive political party in Latvia. The party was founded on 25 February 2017. The Latvian Association of Regions or Latvian Regional Alliance ( lv, Latvijas Reģionu apvienība, LRA) is a centrist political party in Latvia. An election of the delegation from Latvia to the European Parliament was held on 24 May 2014. Background At the previous European Parliament election in Latvia in 2009, the country elected 8 MEPs. Upon entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty Latvia was awarded 1 additional MEP, again bringing the total number of MEPs representing Latvia to 9. Calculated from the results of the 2009 election, this MEP came from the Civic Union. For this election however, the number of MEP's representing Latvia was again reduced to 8.
