2019 Alpine Skiing World Cup – Women's Giant Slalom
The women's giant slalom in the 2019 FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup involved 8 events. The battle for the discipline championship was waged between two skiers better known for their slalom prowess: Mikaela Shiffrin of the United States and Petra Vlhová of Slovakia. With only the World Cup finals in Soldeu on 17 March remaining, both women had posted three victories in the discipline to distance themselves from the two most recent champions in the discipline, Tessa Worley of France and Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany. But Shiffrin's two other podium finishes, which Vlhová couldn't match, had staked Shiffrin to a 97-point lead over Vlhová, which meant that all Shiffrin needed to do in the finals was finish in the top 15 (since only the top 15 score points in the finals). Giant Slalom
Giant slalom (GS) is an alpine skiing and alpine snowboarding discipline. It involves skiing between sets of poles ("gates") spaced at a greater distance from each other than in slalom but less than in Super-G. Giant slalom and slalom make up the technical events in alpine ski racing. This category separates them from the speed events of Super-G and downhill. The technical events are normally composed of two runs, held on different courses on the same ski run. Course The vertical drop for a GS course must be for men, and for women. The number of gates in this event is 56–70 for men and 46–58 for women. The number of direction changes in a GS course equals 11–15% of the vertical drop of the course in metres, 13–18% for children. Åre (pronounced like 'Aura') is a ski resort in Jämtland, Sweden, founded in 1909 and owned by SkiStar AB. Wendy Holdener (born 12 May 1993) is a Swiss World Cup alpine ski racer who specialises in slalom and combined. She is a two-time World champion in combined and a five-time Olympic medalist, four individual with one gold medal in the team event at Pyeongchang in 2018. Four years later in 2022, she won a silver medal in the combined. Ragnhild Mowinckel (born 12 September 1992) is a Norwegian World Cup alpine ski racer, representing the club SK Rival. Career Born in Molde, Møre og Romsdal, Mowinckel won the gold medal at the Junior World Championships in 2012 in the giant slalom and super combined as well as bronze in super-G. Earlier that season in January, she made her World Cup debut in a slalom race at Zagreb. Mowinckel collected her first World Cup points with a 25th place in giant slalom in Schladming in March. At St. Moritz in December 2012, she improved to 16th place in the super combined and 19th in the super-G. Federica Brignone (born 14 July 1990) is an Italian World Cup alpine ski racer. She competes in all alpine disciplines, with a focus on giant slalom and super-G. Brignone won the World Cup overall title in 2020, becoming the first Italian female to achieve this feat. She is also an Olympic and World Championship medalist. Courchevel () is a French Alps ski resort. It is a part of Les Trois Vallées, the largest linked ski areas in the world. Courchevel also refers to the towns of Courchevel 1300 (Le Praz), Courchevel 1550, Courchevel 1650 (Moriond), and Courchevel 1850, which are named for their altitudes in metres. On 1 January 2017, Saint-Bon-Tarentaise (1100) merged into the new commune Courchevel. The resort centre of Courchevel is at 1,747 metres (5,732 ft). The name Courchevel 1850 was chosen for marketing reasons to compete with rival ski resort Val d'Isère.
