The 2018–19 KBL season was the 23rd season of the Korean Basketball League (KBL), the highest level of basketball in South Korea. The regular season began play on 13 October 2018. Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus won its seventh KBL championship. 2017–18 KBL Season
The 2017–18 KBL season was the 22nd season of the Korean Basketball League (KBL), the highest level of basketball in South Korea. The regular season began play on 14 October 2017 and ended on 13 March 2018, with the play-offs beginning several days after. Seoul SK Knights won its second KBL championship. Busan KT Sonicboom
Suwon KT Sonicboom () is a professional basketball club based in Suwon, South Korea which plays in the Korean Basketball League. Their home games are played at the Suwon KT Sonicboom Arena. Founded in 1997, the team was initially based in Gwangju and was later relocated to Yeosu, Busan and Suwon, respectively. History Foundation and Gwangju era With the foundation of the professional Korean Basketball League in 1997, Gwangju Nasan Flamans was the ninth team founded as an expansion franchise and was then sponsored by clothing manufacturer Nasan Group. The company bought over the Industrial Bank of Korea's basketball team prior to the start of the newly-founded professional league. While some players from the former IBK team remained, the new team did not inherit its legacy and history with the takeover. James Mays
James Dixon Mays (born March 8, 1986) is an American-born naturalized Central African professional basketball player for Shandong Heroes of the Chinese Basketball Association. He represented the Central African Republic at the 2011 FIBA Africa Championship. High school Mays averaged 20.1 points, 15 rebounds, two steals and two assists per game for Garner High in 2003–04. He shot a strong 54.3 percent from the field that year when he led Garner to the conference championship. A McDonald's All-American nominee as a senior, he was also named MVP of his conference and to the all-conference team. Points per game, often abbreviated PPG, is the average number of points scored by a player per game played in a sport, over the course of a series of games, a whole season, or a career. It is calculated by dividing the total number of points by number of games. The terminology is often used in basketball and ice hockey. Yang Dong-geun (basketball)
Yang Dong-geun (born September 14, 1981) is a South Korean retired basketball player for Ulsan Mobis Phoebus and the Korean national team, where he participated at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup. During his sixteen-year career, he won the KBL Rookie of the Year and was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) in KBL four times. He spent his entire playing career with Ulsan Mobis Phoebus, having been at the forefront of Ulsan's dominance in the league from the early 2000's. KBL Defensive Player Of The Year
The Korean Basketball League Defensive Player of the Year Award (Korean: 최우수수비상) is an annual Korean Basketball League (KBL) award given to the best defensive player during the regular season. The awardee is selected from players voted into the Defensive Best 5 (Korean: 수비 5걸) team. In addition to contributing to their team's overall defensive record, selected players must accumulate high averages in the following statistical categories: blocks, steals and defensive rebounds. Yang Hee-jong
Yang Hee-jong (born 11 May 1984) is a South Korean professional basketball player. He plays for the Anyang KGC of the Korean Basketball League and the South Korean national team. Early life Yang is a native of Suwon and had been a star taekwondo athlete in elementary school but his PE teacher suggested that he try basketball as he was taller than his peers. As a student at Samil Commercial High School, Yang quickly drew the attention of college basketball recruiters as well as youth national team selectors after they won the school's first ever basketball tournament. College career Yang played college basketball for Yonsei University. Kim Nak-hyeon (born March 12, 1995) is a South Korean professional basketball player. He plays for Daegu KOGAS Pegasus in the Korean Basketball League and the South Korean national team. Early life A native of Yeosu, Kim started playing basketball in elementary school. He began attracting the attention of scouts throughout his elementary and middle school years for leading his teams to win over more notable schools; at that time, the best-known basketball schools were mostly concentrated in the Seoul metropolitan area and it was rare for teams from small provincial schools to beat them. Ham Ji-hoon
Ham Ji-hoon (born December 11, 1984) is a South Korean professional basketball player. He plays for Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus in the Korean Basketball League and is the club's captain and longest-serving player after Yang Dong-geun. Early life and college career Ham attended Kyungbock High School and played as a forward before being converted into a center at Chung-Ang University. Although his height, at just under 200 cm, is not considered tall for a center even by KBL standards, he stood out for his physicality. Yang Hong-seok (born July 2, 1997) is a South Korean basketball player. He plays for Korean Basketball League team Changwon LG Sakers and the South Korean national team. Early life Born and raised in Jeonju, Yang moved to Busan as a middle school student. He caught the attention of college recruiters after leading his high school basketball team to stellar results in various high school tournaments. As he was much taller than his peers, he played as a center and only converted into a forward in college. Park Chan-hee (born April 17, 1987) is a South Korean basketball player for Wonju DB Promy and the South Korean national team. Early life Park grew up in Yeosu and moved to Seoul after his father got a job in Incheon. He first became interested in basketball as an elementary school student after seeing a game broadcast on television. KBL Best 5
The KBL Best 5 (Korean: 베스트 5) an annual honor bestowed on the best players in the Korean Basketball League following every season. The honor is analogous to the "All-NBA Team" in the NBA or "Team of the Year" in association football. Voting is conducted by a panel of KBL-registered reporters and journalists who exclusively cover the sport. Both domestic and foreign players are eligible for selection. "One-club man" Yang Dong-geun holds the all-time record for the most number of selections, with nine, and Seo Jang-hoon and Kim Joo-sung are jointly ranked second, with eight selections.
