During the 2018 Winter Paralympics Parade of Nations at the 2018 Winter Paralympics opening ceremony, beginning at 20:00 KST (UTC+9) on 9 March 2018, athletes bearing the flags of their respective nations led their national delegations as they paraded into the Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium in the host city of Pyeongchang, South Korea. Background All teams entered in alphabetical order based on the names of countries in the Korean language, except host nation South Korea, marched last. The collation method used is based on the names as written in Hangul, the Korean alphabet. The names of the nations were announced English and Korean, the official languages of the Paralympic movement and the host nation, in accordance with traditional and International Paralympic Committee (IPC) guidelines. The opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Paralympics took place at the Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium in Pyeongchang, South Korea on March 9, 2018. at 20:00 KST Preparations The site of the opening ceremony, Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium, was built specifically for the games. It seated 35,000. No Olympic or Paralympic events were held there. It was only used for the opening and closing ceremonies. Georgia At The 2018 Winter Paralympics
Georgia sent competitors to the 2018 Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The team has two people who are competing in para-Nordic skiing. One is a man and one is a woman. Biathlon at the 2018 Winter Paralympics was held at the Alpensia Biathlon Centre. The eighteen events took place on 10, 13 and 16 March 2018. Events The program included six event types (three for men and three for women) that were divided into three classifications each (sitting, standing, and visually impaired), for a total of 18 events. Standing biathletes are those that have a locomotive disability but are able to use the same equipment as able-bodied skiers, whereas sitting competitors use a sitski. Skiers with a visual impairment compete with the help of a sighted guide and an acoustic aiming system. Andrea Eskau
Andrea Eskau (born 21 March 1971) is a German handbiker, Paralympic biathlon, and cross country skier who was born in Apolda and was a winner of three gold medals in Summer Paralympic games. In 2014, she became a recipient of another gold medal at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, Russia. In 2013, she was a cross-country sit skiing winner at the IPC Nordic Skiing World Championship. Eskau also competed at the 2016 Paralympic games in Rio de Janeiro winning a gold medal in the H5 Cycling road race and taking home a bronze medal in the H4-5 time trial. In 2018, Eskau went on to compete at her third Winter Paralympmics and won gold in both the 10 km and 12.5 km sitting biathlon. She became a paraplegic in 1998 when she crashed her bike on the way to school. Corey Peters (alpine Skier)
Corey Nathan Peters (born 12 July 1983) is a New Zealand alpine skier and Paralympic medalist. He has represented New Zealand at three Paralympics. Career He won a gold medal at the 2022 Winter Paralympic Games in the sitting downhill event. Peters described his gold medal-winning run as "probably the run of my life." Less than 24 hours later Peters won a silver medal in the super G sitting event. Peters said that picking up the two medals was more than he expected. "Definitely, I think I have exceeded my own expectations," he said. He had previously won a silver medal at the 2014 Winter Paralympic Games, and a bronze medal at the 2018 Winter Paralympic Games. Birgit Skarstein (born 10 February 1989) is a Norwegian competitive rower and cross-country skier. She competed at the 2020 Summer Paralympics, in Women's single sculls, winning a gold medal. Career In rowing at the 2016 Summer Paralympics, she finished fourth in the single sculls event. In cross-country skiing at the 2014 Winter Paralympics, Skarstein competed in the 1 km sprint classic, 5 km free, and 15 km free events. In cross-country skiing at the 2018 Winter Paralympics, she competed in the 1.5 km sprint classic, 7.5 km classic, and 15 km free events. The Snowboarding competition of the 2018 Winter Paralympics was held on 12 and 16 March 2018 at the Jeongseon Alpine Centre in Gangneung, South Korea. Classification Para-snowboarding is divided into three classification categories. ; SB-LL1 : Athletes competing in the class SB-LL1 have significant impairment to one leg, such as amputation above the knee, or "a significant combined impairment in two legs", affecting their balance, their board-control and their ability to navigate uneven terrain. Bibian Mentel-Spee
Bibian Mentel-Spee (27 September 1972 – 29 March 2021) was a Dutch three-fold Winter Paralympics gold-medalist, and five-times world champion para-snowboarding athlete. Mentel won the Paralympic gold medal in the snowboard cross discipline in the 2014 and 2018 Paralympic Winter Games, as well as in the banked slalom in 2018, despite battling cancer nine times since the beginning of the century. She won her 2018 medals at age 45. Mentel co-wrote two books about her life, career, and struggles with cancer, and set up her own "Mentelity" foundation. In 2012, Mentel was invested as a knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau. Career Mentel started her snowboard career in 1993. In 1996 she participated in her first FIS Snowboard World Cup competition.
