2018 Thurrock Council Election
The 2018 Thurrock Council elections took place on 3 May 2018 to elect members of Thurrock Council in England. Councillors in 16 out of the 20 electoral wards were to be up for election. The council remained under no overall control, with a minority Conservative administration running the council. On 26 January 2018, all sitting UKIP councillors resigned from the party and formed a new opposition group called Thurrock Independents. On 13 March 2018, Basildon UKIP announced that they had taken over responsibility for the 6 East Thurrock wards and are now called UKIP Basildon and Thurrock Branch. Before the elections, there was a by-election held in Ockendon which resulted in a Conservative gain after a tie and drawing of lots. The 2016 Thurrock Council election took place on 5 May 2016 to elect members of Thurrock Council in England. This was on the same day as other local elections. The council remained under no overall control. The Labour leader of the council, John Kent, resigned at the subsequent annual meeting of the council. 2019 Thurrock Council Election
The 2019 Thurrock Council election was held on 2 May 2019 to elect members of the Thurrock Council in England. Election A third of the seats were elected on 2 May 2019. Prior to the election, the council was under no overall control, governed by a minority Conservative administration. They held 23 of 49 seats, while Labour held 17 seats, followed by the Thurrock Independents on 9 seats. Elections were held in a total of sixteen wards, with Conservative, Labour, and Thurrock Independent candidates standing in each ward. UKIP stood two candidates. The Green Party, the Liberal Democrats, and the British Union & Sovereignty Party stood one candidate each in Chafford & North Stifford, Grays Riverside, and Belhus respectively. Thurrock Council
Thurrock Borough Council, usually known as simply Thurrock Council, is the local authority for the borough of Thurrock in Essex, England. Since 1997, Thurrock has been a unitary authority, combining the functions of a non-metropolitan county with that of a non-metropolitan district. The other such authority in Essex is Southend-on-Sea. It is a member of the East of England Local Government Association. History Poor law union and urban district In 1835, as a result of the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834, the parishes that make up the modern borough of Thurrock were united under the Orsett Union, a poor law union. 2014 Thurrock Council Election
Elections to Thurrock Council were held on 22 May 2014. The result saw the council change from Labour to no overall control. The UK Independence Party gained five seats, three from the Conservatives and two from Labour. Of the 16 wards contested, six were won by Labour, five by UKIP and five by the Conservatives. Following the election, Labour continued in government, but in a minority administration. Tim Aker
Timür Mark "Tim" Aker (born 23 May 1985) is a British politician who was a Member of the European Parliament for the East of England region. He was elected as a UK Independence Party (UKIP) candidate in 2014. He was head of UKIP's Policy Unit from August 2013 to January 2015, and was UKIP's candidate for the Thurrock constituency in the 2015 general election, coming third in a close 3-way election. Aker left UKIP and joined the Thurrock Independents where he also successfully sought election a councillor in 2018, before later joining the Brexit Party. Early life Aker was born in Orsett to a Turkish father and an English mother, and grew up in Aveley. He attended Havering Sixth Form College. He went on to study at the University of Nottingham, graduating with a BA in History and Politics. David Van Day (born David Paul Day, 28 November 1956) is an English singer, songwriter and politician who was formerly a member of the pop music, pop vocal duet (music), duo Dollar (group), Dollar. Thurrock Independents
The Thurrock Independents, also known as the Thurrock Independents Party (TIP), are a localist and populist British political party based in Thurrock, Essex, England. It was formed in January 2018 when seventeen Thurrock councillors, including then-East of England MEP Tim Aker, broke-away from the UK Independence Party (UKIP) after claiming to have grown disillusioned with party politics. At its height in 2018, the party was Thurrock Council's official opposition group and had two members in the European Parliament.
