2018 Pskov Oblast Gubernatorial Election
The 2018 Pskov Oblast gubernatorial election was held on 9 September 2018, on common election day. To be elected, a candidate must get more than 50% of votes. Governor Mikhail Vedernikov secured a new term after winning 70.68 percent of the vote. If no one had achieved 50%, a runoff would've been held 14 days later. Only the two most successful candidates from the first round participate in the second round. The Governor will be elected for five years. Background The previous Governor of Pskov Oblast Andrey Turchak resigned ahead of schedule on 12 October 2017, to take up the post of the General Secretary of United Russia. On the same day, Mikhail Vedernikov was appointed as acting Governor until the election. Mikhail Yuryevich Vedernikov (russian: Михаил Юрьевич Ведерников; born 7 March 1975) is a Russian politician and the governor of Pskov Oblast since 2017. Biography Mikhail Vedernikov was born in 1975 in Vyborg, Leningrad Oblast. In 1998 he graduated from the Northwestern Academy of Public Administration. In 2000 he joined Unity party and became secretary of its provincial youth organization. In 2001–2005, he was a member of Vyborgsky District council, and then member of Vyborg city council to 2009. At the time he was co-owning wholesale business and travel agency in Vyborg. Since 2007 Vedernikov held the positions of deputy, and then first deputy head of the regional executive committee of United Russia party in Leningrad Oblast. In 2010s he worked in the regional policy department of the Presidential Administration of Russia. Andrey Anatolyevich Turchak (russian: Андрей Анатольевич Турчак; born 20 December 1975) is a Russian politician who has served Secretary of the General Council of United Russia from 12 October 2017 and the Senator from Pskov Oblast from 2 November 2017. Previously, he was the fifth Governor of Pskov Oblast (2009–2017) and Senator from the Pskov Oblast (2007–2009). By being appointed as Governor at the age of 33, he became one of Russia's youngest governors. In 2013, Alexei Navalny released documents showing that Turchak had neglected to declare a $1.7 million villa that he had purchased in France, an illegal omission under Russian law. In 2015, reporter Oleg Kashin accused Turchak of ordering an attack which left Kashin in a coma with a fractured skull. Lev Markovich Shlosberg (russian: Лев Ма́ркович Шло́сберг; born 30 July 1963, Pskov) is a Russian politician, human rights activist, journalist, chairman of the Pskov Oblast branch of Yabloko, and a member of its federal political committee. Biography Shlosberg is of Ashkenazi Jewish descent. He joined Yabloko in 1994, becoming head of the Pskov branch of the party in 1996. From 2011 to 2015 he was a member of the Pskov Oblast Assembly of Deputies. He has gained fame in August 2014 when he made a publication for the newspaper «Pskovskaya guberniya», where he spread information about the suspicious deaths of troops of 76th Guards Air Assault Division, Leonid Kichatkin and Alexander Osipov. 2018 Russian Gubernatorial Elections
2018 Gubernatorial elections in Russia were held in 26 federal subjects of Russia. 22 federal subjects had direct elections and 4 federal subjects had indirect elections of governors. The main election day was held on 9 September. In addition, the second round was held in four regions: in two regions it was held on 26 September, in one region on 11 November. In Primorsky Krai, the second round was held on 16 September, but its results were declared invalid, in connection with which new elections will be held on 16 December. In addition, the election of the Governor of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug was held on 1 October.
