2018 El Paso, Texas Elections
On November 6, 2018, El Paso County elected a new member of the House of Representatives of the United States, a new county judge, two county commissioners, five state representatives, four city council members. The national, state and county elections are partisan, and the city council election is non-partisan (there is no primary election for the city, but if no candidate wins a majority there will be a run-off election). The city and county officials elected will serve four year terms, and the state representatives and Congressperson will serve two year terms. There are several open races, as the incumbent member of Congress, Beto O'Rourke, a Democrat, unsuccessfully ran for the Senate against Ted Cruz, and the incumbent county judge, Veronica Escobar, ran successfully for O'rourke's seat in the House of Representatives. Joe Moody (Texas)
Joseph Edward Moody (born January 9, 1981) is a lawyer from El Paso, Texas, who was Speaker Pro Tempore of the Texas House of Representatives. He has represented District 78, based entirely in El Paso County, since 2013. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Moody previously represented District 78 for the single term from 2009 to 2011. In 2012, he unseated the Republican Dee Margo, Mayor of El Paso from 2017 to 2021. Moody defeated Margo in the general elections of both 2008 and 2012, but Margo prevailed in the 2010 contest, with lowered turnout in a mid-term election. Moody won his fifth nonconsecutive term in the House in the general election held on November 6, 2018. El Paso Independent School District
The El Paso Independent School District (or EPISD) is the largest school district serving El Paso, Texas (USA). Originally organized in 1883, it is currently the largest district in the Texas Education Agency's Educational Service Center (ESC) Region 19, as well as the largest district within the city of El Paso and El Paso County. The EPISD also provides public education to the children of U.S. Army soldiers stationed at Fort Bliss. The district headquarters are located in El Paso. In 2009, the school district was rated "academically acceptable" by the Texas Education Agency. John Cook (Texas Politician)
John F. Cook (born February 27, 1946) is an American businessman, veteran, civic leader, and member of the Paso Del Norte Group. Cook was Mayor of El Paso, Texas for two terms from 2005 to 2013. Due to the City Charter's term limits clause Cook was not eligible for a third term in 2013. Life and career Cook graduated from New York City's Immaculata High School in 1964. He attended the University of Texas at El Paso and earned a degree in business in 1977. In 1970, Cook married his wife Tram Cook, with whom he has six children, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Cook has lived for most of his life in Northeast El Paso, where his family has owned and operated several businesses. Joseph C. "Joe" Pickett (born December 6, 1956) is an American politician who served as a Democratic member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1995 until his resignation in January 2019. Pickett represented the 79th District, which encompasses part of El Paso County. Political career Pickett started his political career as a City Council member for the City of El Paso, Texas, defeating the incumbent in 1991. He served on the City Council until he was elected to the position of State Representative for the 79th District in 1994. Early life and education Blanco was raised in El Paso by a single mother and graduated from Eastwood High School.
