2017–18 Plunket Shield Season
The 2017–18 Plunket Shield was the 89th season of the Plunket Shield, the domestic first-class cricket competition in New Zealand. The competition started on 23 October 2017 and finished on 5 April 2018. Canterbury were the defending champions. The round eight fixture between Canterbury and Auckland at the Mainpower Oval in Rangiora was called off due to an unsafe pitch. The umpires abandoned the game after only three balls were bowled on day three of the match. Central Districts won the tournament, following the final round of fixtures, after their nearest rivals, Wellington, failed to win their last match. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. A significant omission of the ICC ruling was any attempt to define first-class cricket retrospectively. Declaration And Forfeiture
In the sport of cricket, a declaration occurs when a captain declares his team's innings closed and a forfeiture occurs when a captain chooses to forfeit an innings without batting. Declaration and forfeiture are covered in Law 15 of the ''Laws of Cricket''. This concept applies only to matches in which each team is scheduled to bat in two innings; Law 15 specifically does not apply in any form of limited overs cricket. Declaration The captain of the batting side may declare an innings closed, when the ball is dead, at any time during a match. Usually this is because the captain thinks their team has already scored enough runs to win the match and does not wish to consume any further time batting which would make it easier for the opponents to play out for a draw. Daniel Flynn (cricketer)
Daniel Raymond Flynn (born 16 April 1985) is a New Zealand former cricketer who played for Northern Districts and has also represented the New Zealand international side. In April 2020, Flynn announced his retirement from cricket. Domestic career He has captained the New Zealand Under-19 side in Youth ODIs. Scott Kuggeleijn
Scott Kuggeleijn (born 3 January 1992) is a New Zealand international cricketer. He plays first-class cricket for Northern Districts. Domestic and T20 career In the 2016–17 Ford Trophy, Kuggeleijn took the most wickets in the tournament, with seventeen dismissals in nine matches. In June 2018, he was awarded a contract with Northern Districts for the 2018–19 season. Bradley Dean Schmulian (born 3 August 1990) is a New Zealand cricketer who plays for Central Districts cricket team, Central Districts. Early life He was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and moved to New Zealand at the age of nine. Schmulian was awarded the Auckland Cricket Association Men's Player of the Year in 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2015/16. He made a move to Hawke’s Bay from Auckland in November 2016 when he was not getting the opportunity in the Auckland cricket provincial setup. Luke James Woodcock (born 19 March 1982) is a former New Zealand cricketer who has played for New Zealand in limited over internationals. He also played for Wellington in New Zealand's domestic competitions. An all-rounder, he batted left handed and bowled left-arm orthodox spin. Shaun Barry Haig (born 19 March 1982) is a New Zealand former cricketer who played first-class and List A cricket for Otago. A right-handed batsman and occasional wicket-keeper, Haig was contracted to the team between 2006 and 2011. He is now an umpire and stood in matches in the 2015–16 Plunket Shield season. Basin Reserve
The Basin Reserve (commonly known as "The Basin") is a cricket ground in Wellington, New Zealand. It has been used for Test matches, and is the main home ground for the Wellington Firebirds first-class team. The Basin Reserve is the only cricket ground to have New Zealand Historic Place status ( Category II) as it is the oldest Test cricket ground in the country. The ground has been used for events other than cricket, such as concerts, sports events and other social gatherings, but now it is mostly used for cricket, particularly Test matches. On 1 October 2021, Cello Communications, a Wellington-based telecommunications company was appointed as the naming rights partner of the ground, thus the commercial name of the stadium became the Cello Basin Reserve as part of a two-year agreement.
