2017 South Lanarkshire Council Election
Elections to South Lanarkshire Council were held on 4 May 2017 on the same day as the 31 other local authorities in Scotland. The election used the twenty wards created under the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, with 64 Councillors being elected, a reduction of 3 members from 2012. Each ward elected either 3 or 4 members, using the STV electoral system. Following the 2017 election, the Scottish National Party attempted to form a coalition with Labour and the Liberal Democrats which was unsuccessful. The SNP then formed a minority administration. Election result The overall turnout was 46.9% and there were 2,308 rejected ballots. Note: "Votes" are the sum of first preference votes across all council wards. South Lanarkshire Council
South Lanarkshire Council ( gd, Comhairle Siorrachd Lannraig a Deas) is the unitary authority serving the South Lanarkshire council area in Scotland. The council has its headquarters in Hamilton, has 16,000 employees, and a budget of almost £1bn. The large and varied geographical territory takes in rural and upland areas, market towns such as Lanark, Strathaven and Carluke, the urban burghs of Rutherglen, Cambuslang, and East Kilbride which was Scotland's first new town. East Kilbride Central North (ward)
East Kilbride Central North is one of the twenty wards used to elect members of the South Lanarkshire Council. Created in 2007, it currently elects three councillors. As the name suggests, its territory covers the parts of East Kilbride just north of the town centre with the southern boundary being the Queensway (A726) dual carriageway, including the central retail and administrative area itself as well as the neighbourhoods of East Mains, Kirktonholme, the Village and West Mains, most of St Leonards (west of High Common Road) and part of Calderwood (Maxwellton/west of Calderwood Road). A 2017 national review removed a few streets in the east of the ward (between Calderwood Road, Morrishall Road and Hunter Primary School) which had only a small effect on the electorate but caused the loss of one seat from the original four to balance with other wards with similar populations but only three seats. Rutherglen And Hamilton West (UK Parliament Constituency)
Rutherglen and Hamilton West is a burgh constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, which was created for the 2005 general election. It covers almost all of the former constituency of Glasgow Rutherglen and most of the former constituency of Hamilton South, and it elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first-past-the-post system of election. The current MP is Margaret Ferrier, an independent, who won the seat at the 2019 snap general election. She had previously held the seat from 2015 to 2017. Ferrier was previously a Scottish National Party MP until the whip was withdrawn on 1 October 2020 after an incident relating to a breach of the COVID-19 pandemic regulations. Larkhall (South Lanarkshire Ward)
Hamilton South is one of the 20 electoral wards of South Lanarkshire Council. Created in 2007, the ward elects four councillors using the single transferable vote electoral system and covers an area with a population of 18,524 people. The ward is a Labour stronghold with the party winning half the seats at every election since the ward's creation. Between 2014 and 2017, the party held three of the four seats following a defection. Created in 2007, the ward elects four councillors using the single transferable vote electoral system and covers an area with a population of 18,503 people. Stephanie Callaghan
Stephanie Callaghan (born 24 April 1971) is a Scottish politician who has been the Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Uddingston and Bellshill since May 2021. A member of the Scottish National Party (SNP), she was a councillor for South Lanarkshire, representing the Hamilton North and East ward from 2016 to 2022. Early life and career Callaghan was born in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire. She attended the University of Strathclyde. She worked as a manager for Holland and Barrett and took on trainees through Right Track, an organisation assisting young people find jobs and learn skills. She then went on to work for the organisation as a placement officer and then a project coordinator. In her roles, she helped early school leavers and long-term unemployed young people to find jobs. Hamilton North and East is one of the 20 Wards and electoral divisions of the United Kingdom, electoral wards of South Lanarkshire Council. Created in 2007, the ward elects three councillors using the single transferable vote electoral system and covers an area with a population of 15,004 people. Bothwell And Uddingston (ward)
Bothwell and Uddingston is one of the twenty wards used to elect members of the South Lanarkshire Council. It elects three councillors. As its name suggests, the ward's territory comprises the adjoining suburban villages of Bothwell and Uddingston, bounded by the River Clyde to the west and south, and the M74 motorway to the north and east bordering the Thorniewood ward of North Lanarkshire (the localities of which were often historically considered parts of Uddingston, particularly before the two parts were divided between the districts of Hamilton and Motherwell in 1975); these boundaries were unaffected by a 2017 national review. Blantyre is one of the 20 electoral wards of South Lanarkshire Council. Created in 2007, the ward initially elected four councillors using the single transferable vote electoral system before a boundary review in 2017 reduced the number of councillors to three. It covers an area with a population of 15,968 people. The ward is a Labour stronghold with the party holding at least two of the seats since the ward's creation. Gerard Killen
Gerard Killen (born 1 May 1986), known as Ged Killen, is a Scottish Labour and Co-operative politician who served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Rutherglen and Hamilton West from 2017 to 2019. Early life Killen was born in Glasgow, living in the Gorbals before moving to Blantyre where he spent most of his youth. He attended Trinity High School in Rutherglen. Political career Killen joined the Labour Party in 2007 and first stood for public office as a candidate in the 2012 South Lanarkshire Council election. Following the death of sitting SNP councillor Anne Higgins, Killen successfully contested the 2013 Rutherglen South ward by-election and was elected to South Lanarkshire Council aged 26.
