2017 Seattle Mariners Season
The 2017 Seattle Mariners season was the 41st season in franchise history. The Mariners played their 18th full season (19th overall) at Safeco Field and finished with a record of 78–84. They failed to qualify for the postseason, extending their drought to 16 years (having last qualified for the postseason in 2001). In addition to being the longest current streak in MLB, the drought became the longest currently in the four major North American professional sports when the National Football League's Buffalo Bills made it to the playoffs in December of that year. Offseason and spring training The Mariners added many players in a busy offseason, including pitchers Yovani Gallardo and Drew Smyly, and outfielder Jarrod Dyson. American League West
The American League West is one of Major League Baseball's six divisions. The division has five teams as of the 2013 season, but had four teams from 1994 to 2012, and had as many as seven teams before the 1994 realignment. Although its teams currently only reside along the West Coast of the United States, west coast and in Texas, historically the division has had teams as far east as Chicago. From 1998 (when the NL West expanded to five teams) to 2012, the AL West was the only MLB division with four teams. The current champion of this division is the Houston Astros. Todd Andrew Smyly (born June 13, 1989), nicknamed "Big Shooter", is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Chicago Cubs of Major League Baseball (MLB). He has previously played in MLB for the Detroit Tigers, Tampa Bay Rays, Texas Rangers, Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants, Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs. Prior to his professional career, Smyly played college baseball at the University of Arkansas. He competed for the United States national baseball team, winning the silver medal in the 2011 Pan American Games. The Tigers drafted Smyly in the second round of the 2010 MLB draft. 2017 Houston Astros Season
The 2017 Houston Astros season was the team's 56th season for the Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise in Houston, Texas, their 53rd as the Astros, fifth in both the American League (AL) and AL West division, and 18th at Minute Maid Park. The Astros won the World Series in seven games over the Los Angeles Dodgers for the first World Series championship in franchise history. On September 17, the Astros clinched the AL West with a 7–1 victory over the Mariners, for their first AL West division title, and their seventh division title overall. 2014 Texas Rangers Season
The 2014 Texas Rangers (baseball), Texas Rangers season was the Rangers' 54th season of the franchise and the 43rd since the team relocated to Arlington, Texas. The Rangers suffered from injuries throughout the season and spent a substantial part of the season in last place in the American League (AL), at one point having a streak of 8–34. Manager Ron Washington resigned on September 5, 2014, citing personal issues. Ryan Patrick Garton (born December 5, 1989) is an American former professional baseball pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2016 and 2017 and the Seattle Mariners in 2017 and 2019. Career Tampa Bay Rays Garton attended J. W. Mitchell High School in New Port Richey, Florida, and Florida Atlantic University, where he played college baseball for the Florida Atlantic Owls. The Houston Astros are an American professional baseball team based in Houston, Texas. Spring training is the preseason in Major League Baseball (MLB), a series of practices and exhibition games preceding the start of the regular season. Spring training allows new players to try out for Schedule (workplace), roster and position spots, and gives established players practice time prior to competitive play. Spring training has always attracted fan attention, drawing crowds who travel to the warm climates of Arizona and Florida to enjoy the weather and watch their favorite teams play, and spring training usually coincides with spring break for many US students. Ketel Ricardo Marte Valdez (born October 12, 1993) is a Dominican professional baseball second baseman for the Arizona Diamondbacks of Major League Baseball (MLB).
