2017 O'Byrne Cup
The 2017 O'Byrne Cup was played by county and further education college teams of Leinster GAA in January 2017 and was won by Dublin. Format 16 teams compete: 11 county teams (all those of Leinster except Kilkenny) and 5 third-level teams (DIT, UCD, IT Carlow, DCU–Dóchas Éireann and Maynooth University). The teams are drawn into 4 groups of 4 teams each. Each team plays the other teams in their group once, earning 2 points for a win and 1 for a draw. The four group winners compete in the semi-finals. O'Byrne Cup
The Bord na Móna O'Byrne Cup is a Gaelic football competition organised by the Leinster GAA and first staged in 1954. The competition is named after Matt Byrne, a former Wicklow GAA club and county officer. By virtue of a quirk in translation, the Corn Uí Bhroin became known as the O'Byrne cup even though Matt had never used an 'O' in his surname. Byrne was born on February 14, 1870, was a native of Baltinglass and taught at the local national school on Chapel Hill. Deeply involved in GAA activities at any levels throughout his life, he was regarded as a good footballer in his youth as well as an excellent handballer. He was the first secretary of the Maurice Davins' club in Baltinglass and served as a member of the Wicklow County Board for over 50 years, mostly as county registrar. He was also his county's representative on Leinster and Central Councils and served as President of the Irish Handball Council from 1941-1944. He died on September 21, 1947. DIT GAA or Dublin Institute of Technology GAA was a Gaelic Athletic Association University Club in Dublin Institute of Technology County Dublin, Ireland. DIT's men's Gaelic football team compete in the Sigerson Cup and the O'Byrne Cup. DIT won its first Sigerson Cup in 2013, defeating UCC in the final by 3-08 to 0-08. The DIT team was managed by Sean Fox, Billy O'Loughlin and Des Newton. Team Captain in 2013 was All-Star defender Colin Walshe of Doohamlet County Monaghan. The Meath County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Coiste na Mí) or Meath GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Meath, as well as for Meath county teams. Football County team The first notable Meath team was the Pierce O'Mahony's club from Navan that represented the county in the All-Ireland final of 1895, in the days when the competition was played between the champion clubs from each county. O'Mahony's lost to Arravale Rovers of Tipperary by 0-4 to 0-3. The Institute of Technology, Carlow (IT Carlow; ga, Institiúid Teicneolaíochta Cheatharlach) was an institute of technology, located in Carlow, Ireland.
