Newport City Council
Newport City Council () is the governing body for Newport, one of the Principal Areas of Wales. It consists of 51 councillors, who represent the city's 20 wards. The council is currently, and has historically been, held by the Labour Party. However from 2008 to 2012 the council was controlled jointly by the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats due to there being no party with an overall majority. Between 1996 and 2002 the authority was known as Newport County Borough Council. History Newport is an ancient mesne borough, occupying an important position on the Welsh Marches. The town grew up round the castle built early in the 12th century. Giraldus Cambrensis, writing in 1187, calls it ''Novus Burgus'', probably to distinguish it from Caerleon, whose prosperity declined as that of Newport increased. 2017 United Kingdom Local Elections
The 2017 United Kingdom local elections were held on Thursday 4 May 2017. Local elections were held across Great Britain, with elections to 35 English local authorities and all councils in Scotland and Wales. Newly created combined authority mayors were directly elected in six areas of England: Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, Greater Manchester, the Liverpool City Region, Tees Valley, the West Midlands, and the West of England. In addition, Doncaster and North Tyneside re-elected local authority mayors. Local by-elections for 107 council seats also took place on 4 May. The Conservative Party led under Prime Minister Theresa May enjoyed the best local election performance in a decade, making significant gains at the expense of the Labour Party. Elections to Newport City Council were held on 5 May 2022 along with elections to the other 21 local authorities in Wales, community council elections in Wales and 2022 United Kingdom local elections. The previous full council election took place in May 2017, though there had also been a number of by-elections in the city in the intervening period. Background The Labour Party had controlled Newport since 2012 and the Liberal Democrats, Conservatives and independents were hoping to make some inroads at this election. Following an electoral boundary review, the overall number of electoral wards increased from 20 to 21, with the total number of councillors increasing by one, from 50 to 51. The former Rogerstone ward was split into three while the Tredegar Park and Marshfield ward were merged. The Langstone, Llanwern and Lliswerry wards were substantially reconfigured. Deborah Ann Wilcox, Baroness Wilcox of Newport (born 15 June 1957) is a Welsh Labour councillor, and former teacher, who had served from May 2016 until September 2019 as Leader of Newport City Council. She is also head of the Welsh Local Government Association, a role she has held since 2017. In September 2019, it was announced that she would be made a Labour life peer in the 2019 Prime Minister's Resignation Honours and would be stepping down as Council Leader. Early life Wilcox was born in the Rhondda valley, and brought up in Pontygwaith. She studied for a BEd Drama and Education at the Central School of Speech and Drama between 1975 and 1979, followed by a MA in Media Studies at University of Wales, Cardiff between 1994 and 1997. 2017 Welsh Local Elections
The 2017 Welsh local elections were held on 4 May 2017 to elect members of all 22 local authorities in Wales. This included the Isle of Anglesey, which was previously up for election in 2013 due to having its elections delayed for a year. Community council elections also took place on the same day. These local elections were held as part of the 2017 local elections in the United Kingdom. Apart from Anglesey, the last elections were held in 2012. Normally these elections take place every four years, but the 2017 elections were postponed for a year in order to avoid clashing with the 2016 Welsh Assembly election, which itself had been postponed by a year to avoid clashing with the 2015 general election. Welsh Labour incurred a net loss of 112 council seats, losing control control of the Blaenau Gwent, Merthyr Tydfil and Bridgend councils.
