2017 Chulalongkorn University Incident
On 3 August 2017, Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal and seven Chulalongkorn University students and council members walked out of an initiation ceremony for first year students to pay respect to former kings Chulalongkorn and Vajiravudh in the courtyard of the university. A furious professor suddenly put one vice student council president, Supaluk Bumroongkij, in a chokehold. The incident was filmed and distributed causing a national controversy. After an investigation, Chulalongkorn University deducted behavioral points from all eight students involved and banned them from participating in university events. The decision was controversial, however, and criticized by the university's alumni with a global petition created by the Thai Academic Network for Civil Rights (TANCR). Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal ( th, เนติวิทย์ โชติภัทร์ไพศาล; born 10 September 1996), nicknamed Frank ( th, แฟรงก์), is a Thai student activist, librarian, preservationist, conscientious objector, producer, publisher, and author. He is a founder of TERA (Thailand Educational Revolution Alliance) and Education for Liberation of Siam. Both groups aim to reform the Thai education system. In addition, he has established Samnak Nisit Sam Yan Press for publishing thoughts and ideas in Thai language, and also Humanity Beyond Borders for giving assistance to refugees and those in needs of protection. Dorion Sagan (born 1959) is an American essayist, fiction writer, poet, and theorist of ecology. He has written and co-authored books on culture, art, literature, evolution, and the history and philosophy of science, including ''Cosmic Apprentice,'' ''Cracking the Aging Code,'' and ''Lynn Margulis: The Life and Legacy of a Scientific Rebel.'' Ilan Pappé ( he, אילן פפה, ; born 1954) is an expatriate Israeli historian and socialist activist.
