2017 Carmarthenshire County Council Election
The sixth election to Carmarthenshire County Council was held on 4 May 2017 as part of wider local elections across Wales. The election was preceded by the 2012 election. It will be followed by the 2022 election Plaid Cymru narrowly missed out in forming the first majority administration in Carmarthenshire Council's history, despite gaining eight seats in the election. The Labour Party maintained its position from the 2012-2017 term, with the Independents losing many seats in the rural areas of Carmarthenshire to Plaid Cymru. Four candidates (from the seventy four seats) were elected unopposed. A Plaid Cymru-Independent coalition was formed after the election, with Emlyn Dole remaining as the Leader of Council. 2012 Carmarthenshire County Council Election
The fifth election to the Carmarthenshire County Council was held on 1 May 2012. It was preceded by the 2008 election and was followed by the 2017 election. Plaid Cymru won 28 seats whilst Labour and the Independents won 23 each. The main feature of the election was a Labour recovery in the Llanelli area, and to some extent in the Gwendraeth and Ammanford area also, mainly at the expense of Independent candidates. Plaid Cymru lost ground to Labour in the Llanelli area but gained seats elsewhere, becoming the largest party. An Independent-Labour coalition was again formed, but with Labour as the leading partner. As a result, Kevin Madge replaced Meryl Gravell as the leader of the council. Madge resigned as leader of the council in May 2015, having lost the leadership of the Labour group. Two days later it was announced that Plaid Cymru would from a coalition with the Independents. Cenarth (electoral Ward)
Cenarth () is an electoral ward, representing the communities of Newcastle Emlyn and Cenarth, Carmarthenshire, Wales. It is strangely named Cenarth, rather than Newcastle Emlyn as Newcastle Emlyn has the larger population. A similar ward for local elections prior to 1987 was named Newcastle Emlyn. Profile In 2014, the Cenarth electoral ward had an electorate of xx. The total population was xx, of whom very few were born in Wales. Few of the population were able to speak Welsh. Keith Davies
Keith Davies is a Welsh Labour politician and was the National Assembly for Wales member for Llanelli from 2011 until 2016. He beat Helen Mary Jones who was the deputy leader of Plaid Cymru, and incumbent AM for Llanelli, in May 2011. He is a member of the Enterprise and Business Committee, and Environment and Sustainability Committee. His membership of crossparty groups includes: The Armed Forces and Cadets, Human Trafficking, Kidney, Older people, and Muscular Dystrophy. He is the founding chair of the Cross Party Group on the Welsh Language. Davies was a teacher and a Director of Education at Carmarthenshire County Council, but lost his job in 2000 when departments were merged. Hengoed is an electoral ward for Carmarthenshire County Council and Llanelli Rural Council in Llanelli Rural, Carmarthenshire, Wales. The ward is to the west of the town of Llanelli. The ward covers the villages of Furnace, Pwll, Sandy and most of the valley of the River Dulais. The population of this ward at the 2011 census was 3,745. Hendy ( cy, Yr Hendy) is a village in the community of Llanedi, Carmarthenshire, Wales. It is situated at the Carmarthenshire and the City and County of Swansea border. Gorslas
Gorslas is a village and a community in Carmarthenshire, Wales, located on the A476 road northwest of Cross Hands. The village population at the 2011 census was 4,066. Neighbouring villages are Cefneithin and Penygroes. The community is bordered by the Carmarthenshire communities of Llanarthney, Llanfihangel Aberbythych, Llandybie, Llannon, Pontyberem, and Llanddarog. The community includes the settlements of Drefach, Cwmmawr, Foelgastell, and Cefneithin. Gorslas will have a new primary school, opening on 7th September 2022, a year later than planned following the coronavirus pandemic. Glanamman (electoral Ward)
Glanamman is the name of an electoral ward for Carmarthenshire County Council, in the Amman Valley, Carmarthenshire, Wales. It is represented by one county councillor. Description The Glanamman county ward covers the Cwmamman community wards of Grenig and Tircoed, which include the areas north and south of the village of Glanamman. The eastern half of Cwmamman is covered by the Garnant ward. The population of Glanamman ward at the 2011 census was 2,347. A 2019 boundary review by the Local Government Boundary Commission for Wales recommended ward boundaries remain the same, but the name of the ward be changed from Glanamman to Glanaman, the standard Welsh spelling. Garnant
Garnant is a Welsh mining village in the valley of the River Amman in Carmarthenshire, north of Swansea. Like the neighbouring village of Glanamman it experienced a coal-mining boom in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but the last big colliery closed in 1936 and coal has been extracted fitfully since then. The village has the only Commissioners' church built in southwest Wales, traditionally a Methodist region. History The location of Garnant and Glanamman was known as Cwmamman ("Amman valley") before coal was discovered; until the 18th century it was a remote wilderness with just a few farms and rough mountain roads. Mining appears to have started at Brynlloi in Glanamman in 1757 and small coal workings proliferated in the first half of the 19th century. The lease to "Garnant Colliery" was offered in an advert of 1830, which was probably at the border of Garnant and Gwaun-cae-gurwen near the main road. Felinfoel
Felinfoel (pronounced ) is a small village and electoral ward on the River Lliedi on the northern border of Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, West Wales, with a population of about 2,000. The Felinfoel Brewery, home of Double Dragon Ale, is the oldest in Wales. It was the first brewery outside the US to sell beer in cans. The village is renowned for its close community and ties with many famous names that have starred in past Llanelli RFC line-ups. John Paul Jenkins (born 1981) is a local politician in Wales, in the United Kingdom. He is a county councillor for the Elli ward of Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, and a town councillor for the same ward on Llanelli Town Council. He stood for election as a candidate of the Conservative Party for both authorities. Background Jenkins was educated at Graig Comprehensive School, Llanelli, before studying social policy at the University of Wales, Swansea. Political career Jenkins was elected at the local elections on 10 June 2004. As of 2006, he was the youngest elected representative in Carmarthenshire. Elli is an electoral ward for Llanelli Town Council and Carmarthenshire County Council in Llanelli, Wales. The ward covers a residential area in the north of Llanelli, bounded to the south by Parc y Dref, to the east by Old Road and to the west by Llanelli Rural.
