2017 Alpine Skiing World Cup – Men's Giant Slalom
The men's giant slalom in the 2017 FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup involved nine events, including the second-ever parallel giant slalom (again in Alta Badia) and the season finals in Aspen, Colorado (USA). Marcel Hirscher of Austria won four of the races this season and finished second in four others, easily winning the discipline for the third straight season on his way to his sixth straight overall World Cup championship. Hirscher was so dominant during the season (winning the discipline by almost 300 points) that much of the focus in the news coverage by the end of the season was about his desire to continue, considering the pressure on him to win (especially in his native Austria). The season was interrupted by the 2017 World Ski Championships, which were held from 6–20 February in St. Moritz, Switzerland. The men's giant slalom was held on 17 February. Giant Slalom
Giant slalom (GS) is an alpine skiing and alpine snowboarding discipline. It involves skiing between sets of poles ("gates") spaced at a greater distance from each other than in slalom but less than in Super-G. Giant slalom and slalom make up the technical events in alpine ski racing. This category separates them from the speed events of Super-G and downhill. The technical events are normally composed of two runs, held on different courses on the same ski run. Course The vertical drop for a GS course must be for men, and for women. The number of gates in this event is 56–70 for men and 46–58 for women. The number of direction changes in a GS course equals 11–15% of the vertical drop of the course in metres, 13–18% for children. Matts Olsson (born 1 December 1988) is a Swedish former World Cup alpine ski racer who raced in the giant slalom discipline. Born in Karlstad, Olsson made his World Cup debut at age 19 in October 2007. Stefan Luitz (; born 26 March 1992) is a German World Cup alpine ski racer. He primarily competes in giant slalom, but in January 2016 at Kitzbühel, Luitz completed both runs in slalom, a first in his World Cup career, and finished eighteenth. His only previous second run in slalom was more than three years earlier, in December 2012 at Madonna di Campiglio, where he failed to finish. Leif Kristian Nestvold-Haugen (born 29 November 1987) is a Norwegian World Cup alpine ski racer, specializing in the technical events of giant slalom and slalom. Haugen made his World Cup debut in October 2009 in Sölden, and collected his first World Cup points with a 26th place. He won a bronze medal in giant slalom at the World Championships in 2017 and attained his first World Cup podium in March 2017 at Kranjska Gora, Slovenia. Nestvold-Haugen represents the sports club Lommedalens IL, and hails from Lommedalen. Henrik Kristoffersen (born 2 July 1994) is a Norwegian World Cup alpine ski racer, World Champion, and Olympic medalist. He specializes in the technical events of slalom and giant slalom. Career Born in Rælingen in Akershus county, Kristoffersen made his World Cup debut in March 2012 in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, and attained his first podium in November 2013, a third-place finish in slalom at Levi, Finland. Felix Neureuther (; born 26 March 1984) is a German retired World Cup alpine ski racer and former World champion. Early life Born in Munich-Pasing, Neureuther is the son of former World and Olympic champion Rosi Mittermaier and Christian Neureuther, a slalom specialist and winner of six World Cup races. He is the nephew of Evi Mittermaier, who was also a successful alpine ski racer and former Olympian in 1976 and 1980. Alexis Pinturault () (born 20 March 1991) is a French World Cup alpine ski racer and Olympic medalist. With 34 World Cup victories, Pinturault is the most successful French skier in World Cup history. Mathieu Faivre (born 18 January 1992) is a French World Cup alpine ski racer, and specializes in giant slalom. He has competed for France in two Winter Olympics and six World Championships. In 2021, he won two gold medals for world titles in giant slalom and parallel giant slalom.
