2016–17 Valparaiso Crusaders Men's Basketball Team
The 2016–17 Valparaiso Crusaders men's basketball team represented Valparaiso University during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Crusaders, led by first-year head coach Matt Lottich, played their home games at the Athletics–Recreation Center as members of the Horizon League. They finished the season 24–9, 14–4 in Horizon League play to finish in a tie for the Horizon League regular season championship. As the No. 2 seed in the Horizon League tournament, they lost to Milwaukee in the quarterfinals. They received an invitation to the National Invitation Tournament where they lost in the first round to Illinois. This was the Crusaders' final season as a member of the Horizon League as the school announced on May 25, 2017 that it would be joining the Missouri Valley Conference effective July 1, 2017. Matt Lottich
Matthew Lottich ( ; born July 29, 1982) is an American basketball coach who is the current head coach of the Valparaiso University men's basketball team. He was named head coach on April 7, 2016, one day after Bryce Drew left the program. Lottich had been an assistant at Valparaiso since 2013. He went to New Trier High School in Winnetka, IL where he was an all-state athlete in basketball, baseball, and as a quarterback in football. He played collegiately at Stanford University, where he earned Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 accolades as a senior. After college, Lottich played professional basketball internationally. The 2015–16 Texas Southern Tigers basketball team represented Texas Southern University during the 2015–16 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Tigers, led by fourth year head coach Mike Davis, played pik home games at the Health and Physical Education Arena and were members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. They finished the season 18–15, 16–2 in SWAC play to win the regular season SWAC championship. They defeated Alabama A&M in the quarterfinals of the SWAC tournament to advance to the semifinals where they lost to Southern. Vashil Fernandez
Vashil Fernandez (born January 16, 1992) is a Jamaican professional basketball player who plays for Marín Ence PeixeGalego of the Spanish LEB Oro. He played college basketball for Valparaiso. Early life Fernandez grew up outside of Kingston, Jamaica in a house with 19 people. He never knew his father and his mother commuted to the city for work. He played soccer and ran track, but didn't start playing basketball until he was 17. Fernandez recalls being terrible at first and travelling a lot. For high school, he moved to the United States and ended up at Princeton Day Academy in Maryland. After visiting Valparaiso, he committed to play for the Crusaders. Maywood, Illinois
Maywood is a village in Proviso Township, Cook County, Illinois, United States in the Chicago metropolitan area. It was founded on April 6, 1869, and organized October 22, 1881. The population was 23,512 at the 2020 United States Census. The Vanderbilt Commodores men's basketball team represents Vanderbilt University in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The Commodores have won three SEC regular-season titles (1965, 1974 and 1993) and two SEC Tournament championships ( 1951 and 2012). Bryce Drew
Bryce Homer Drew (born September 21, 1974) is an American college basketball coach and former player who is the head coach of the Grand Canyon Antelopes. Previously he served as the head coach of the Vanderbilt Commodores and in the same capacity at his alma mater, Valparaiso, having succeeded his father, Homer Drew. Drew has led his teams to the NCAA tournament on four occasions, including at least once at each of the three schools he has been the head coach of. Bryce's brother, Scott, also coached at Valpo before becoming the head coach of the Baylor Bears. The 2015–16 George Washington Colonials men's basketball team represented George Washington University during the 2015–16 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Colonials, led by fifth year head coach Mike Lonergan, played their home games at the Charles E. Smith Center and were members of the Atlantic 10 Conference. They finished the season 28–10, 11–7 in A-10 play to finish in fifth place.
