2016–17 Indian Women's League
The 2016–17 Indian Women's League was the first season of the Indian Women's League, a women's football league in India. The season was scheduled to kick off with the preliminary rounds on 17 October 2016 in which the top two teams from the two groups qualified for the league proper. In the final round four teams from qualifier joined by two direct entry teams. Eastern Sporting Union won the title in the inaugural season. Preliminary round Teams Eastern Sporting Union and Rising Student Club entered final rounds by topping their groups, and Alakhpura and Jeppiaar Institute as group runners-up. Teams Team locations Personnel Final round The final round will be held from January 28 to February 14 at the Ambedkar Stadium. The league proper will follow a round robin format with the top four teams advancing to the semifinals. Indian Women's League
The Indian Women's League, known as ''Hero Indian Women's League'' for sponsorship ties with Hero MotoCorp is the women's top tier professional football league in Indian football. Founded in 2016, currently a total of 18 teams from across the country will participate in the league from 2022-23 Season. The competition was planned since 2014 and got established in 2016, with the first season starting from October 2016 in Cuttack. The league was launched as India's first professional football league for women with the aim to increase the player pool for India national team. Since 2019–20, the clubs that become champions are granted an opportunity to play in the AFC Women's Club Championship, the top tier women's club football competition in Asia.
