2016–17 California Golden Bears Men's Basketball Team
The 2016–17 California Golden Bears men's basketball team represented the University of California, Berkeley in the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. This was Cuonzo Martin's third year as head coach at California. The Golden Bears played their home games at Haas Pavilion as members of the Pac-12 Conference. They finished the season 21–13, 10–8 in Pac-12 play to finish in a tie for fifth place. They defeated Oregon State and Utah in Pac-12 tournament to advance to the semifinals where they lost to Oregon. They were one of the last four teams not selected for the NCAA tournament and thus received a No. 1 seed in the National Invitation Tournament where they lost in the first round to Cal State Bakersfield. Cuonzo Martin
Cuonzo LaMar Martin (born September 23, 1971) is an American basketball coach and former player who is the former head coach of the Missouri Tigers men's basketball team. High school Playing alongside LaPhonso Ellis as a sophomore and junior, Martin played on two state championship teams for Lincoln High in his native East St. Louis, Illinois. Through his 3 years in the IHSA tournament, Martin scored 198 points and grabbed 111 rebounds in 12 games. In 2007, Martin and Ellis were voted among the "100 Legends of the IHSA Boys Basketball Tournament," recognizing their superior performance in their appearances in the tournament. Jaylen Marselles Brown (born October 24, 1996) is an American professional basketball player for the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played one year of college basketball for the California Golden Bears, being named first-team all-conference and Freshman of the Year in the Pac-12 Conference. Tyrone Tyrin Wallace (born June 10, 1994) is an American professional basketball player for Paris Basketball of the LNB Pro A. He played college basketball for the California Golden Bears. He was selected with the 60th pick of the 2016 NBA Draft. High school career Wallace attended Bakersfield High School, where he became his school's all-time scoring leader with 1,767 career points. He was also a two-time Bakersfield Californian Player of the Year, and in his senior season in 2012, he was a Second Team All-CIF selection. The Gonzaga Bulldogs are an intercollegiate men's basketball program representing Gonzaga University. The school competes in the West Coast Conference in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Jordan Mathews (born June 22, 1994) is an American professional basketball player for Spójnia Stargard of the Polish Basketball League (PLK). He played in college for California and Gonzaga. College career Out of Santa Monica High School, Mathews was a top recruit out of high school for California. He had a solid freshman campaign under coach Mike Montgomery and had a 32-point game versus Oregon. As a sophomore, Mathews averaged 13.6 points per game. He posted 13.5 points per game as a junior and earned his degree after taking six classes in 12 weeks. The 2016 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 68 teams playing in a single-elimination tournament to determine the men's National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college basketball national champion for the 2015–16 season.
