2016–17 Birmingham City F.C. Season
The 2016–17 season is Birmingham City Football Club's 114th season in the English football league system and sixth consecutive season in the second-tier Championship. It covers the period from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017. With the team lying just outside the play-off positions, and two days after three new directors had joined the board, manager Gary Rowett and his backroom staff were sacked on 14 December 2016. Later that day, former West Ham United and Watford manager Gianfranco Zola was announced as Rowett's successor. After four months, during which the team won just twice and dropped to 20th place, three points outside the relegation zone with three matches remaining, Zola resigned, to be replaced by Harry Redknapp, initially to the end of the season. Gary Rowett
Gary Rowett (born 6 March 1974) is an English professional football manager and former player, who is currently manager of Championship club Millwall. As a player, he was a defender, and played in the Premier League for Everton, Derby County, Leicester City and Charlton Athletic. He also played in the Football League for Cambridge United, Blackpool, Birmingham City and Burton Albion. His professional career ended in 2004, through a knee injury. In May 2009, he was appointed assistant manager to Paul Peschisolido at Burton, and took over as manager in 2012. He was appointed the manager of Birmingham City in October 2014 and served until December 2016. He became Derby County manager in March 2017, and joined Stoke City in May 2018. Ryan Shotton
Ryan Colin Shotton (born 30 October 1988) is an English professional footballer and manager who plays as a defender. He is currently player/manager of Midland League club Hanley Town. Shotton progressed through the Stoke City Academy and signed a professional contract in 2007. He went on loan to Altrincham, Tranmere Rovers and Barnsley respectively to gain first team experience. He broke into the Stoke squad towards the end of the 2010–11 season. He played in the UEFA Europa League in 2011–12 scoring against Maccabi Tel Aviv. In September 2013 Shotton joined Wigan Athletic on loan. He then joined Derby County on loan in August 2014 before completing a permanent move in January 2015. Jonathan Grounds
Jonathan Martin Grounds (born 2 February 1988) is an English professional footballer who plays as a left back or centre back for club Exeter City. Grounds began his career with his local club, Middlesbrough, but never became a regular member of the first team; he made 33 league appearances spread across five years. He also spent time on loan to Norwich City of the Championship, twice, Scottish Premier League club Hibernian, and Chesterfield and Yeovil Town, both of League One. He left Middlesbrough in 2012 and signed for Oldham Athletic, also of League One, on a free transfer. After two seasons with Oldham, he signed for Birmingham City, where he was a first-team regular for four seasons before spending the 2018–19 season on loan at Bolton Wanderers. Oxford United
Oxford United Football Club is a professional football club in the city of Oxford, England. The team plays in League One, the third tier of the English football league system. The chairman is Grant Ferguson, the manager is Karl Robinson and the team captain is Elliott Moore. The club was founded on 27 October 1893 as Headington Football Club. Replay (sports)
A replay (also called a rematch) is the repetition of a match in many sports. Association football In association football, replays were often used to decide the winner in a knock-out tournament when the previous match ended in a draw, especially in finals. In 1970, FIFA (the worldwide governing body of the sport) and IFAB (the international rules committee for the sport) allowed penalty shoot-outs to be held if a match ended in a draw after extra time. The penalty shootout made its appearance immediately thereafter. The first instance of a shootout replacing a replay (rather than lots) was the final of the 1976 European championship. The shootout's first use at the World Cup took place in the 1982 semi-finals. The English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888 as the Football League, the league is the oldest such competition in the world.
