2016 Wellington Local Elections
The 2016 Wellington local elections were part of the wider 2016 New Zealand local elections, to elect members to sub-national councils and boards. The Wellington elections cover one regional council (the Greater Wellington Regional Council), eight territorial authorities (city and district councils), three district health boards, and various community boards and licensing trusts. Greater Wellington Regional Council Wellington constituency (5) Incumbent councillor Judith Aitken did not seek re-election. 2016 New Zealand Local Elections
The 2016 New Zealand local elections were triennial local elections to select local government officials and District Health Board members. Under section 10 of the Local Electoral Act 2001, a "general election of members of every local authority or community board must be held on the second Saturday in October in every third year" from the date the Act came into effect in 2001, meaning 8 October 2016. Paul Swain (politician)
Paul Desmond Swain (born 20 December 1951) is a New Zealand former politician. He is a member of the New Zealand Labour Party, Labour Party. Early life Swain was born in Palmerston North on 20 December 1951. He attended St. Patrick's College, Wellington, St. Patrick's College in Wellington. He has obtained a Bachelor of Arts, BA from Victoria University of Wellington. Swain has two daughters and a son with his wife Toni Reeves-Swain, and two sons from an earlier marriage. Before entering politics, he worked for the Ministry of Social Development (New Zealand), Ministry of Social Development from 1975 to 1976 before becoming a bus driver for the Wellington City Council in 1976. Wainuiomata
Wainuiomata () is a large suburb of Lower Hutt, in the Wellington Region of New Zealand's North Island. Origin of name The word 'Wainui-o-mata' is a Māori name made up of the words Wai = water, Nui = big, O = of, and Mata – which could refer to a woman's name. The origins of the word are disputed, but one commonly accepted translation refers to the women who came over the Wainuiomata Hill to evade marauding tribes from the north, and who sat wailing by the stream after the slaughter of their menfolk. From this we have 'faces streaming with water' or 'tears' although it could equally refer to the large pools of water which lay over the swampy surface (face) of the northern end of the Valley, or the river itself which is known to flood the Wainui (Coast Road) valley. Days Bay
Days Bay is a residential area in Lower Hutt in the Wellington Region of the North Island of New Zealand. It is walled on three sides by steep bush-clad slopes. Most of its level land is occupied by Williams Park and an independent boys' primary school, originally a part of Williams Park. Wellington shipowner, J H Williams, bought land in Days Bay near the end of the 19th century to create custom for his smaller vessels, building a wharf and turning the bay into a sports and resort development for day-trippers and holiday-makers. Williams sold his interest in 1905 and the new owners split off building sites on unneeded land. Ray Wallace (mayor)
William Raymond Wallace (born 1961) is a New Zealand politician. He served as mayor of Lower Hutt from 2010 to 2019. Biography Early life Wallace was born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, in 1961. He received his education at Te Aro Primary, St Mark's Church School and Wellington College. He has worked in real estate, health care, and the security industry. Wallace is married and lives in Wainuiomata. Political career Wallace stood for the National Party in the seat of Pencarrow (which covered much of Lower Hutt) at the 1990 general election. He lost to Labour's Sonja Davies. Wallace was first elected to Hutt City Council in the Wainuiomata ward in a 1995 by-election, he served as deputy mayor from 2001 to 2004. Wayne Guppy
Wayne Noel Guppy (born 31 August 1954) is a New Zealand local-body politician. He has been the Mayor of Upper Hutt since 2001. Early life Guppy was born in Upper Hutt on 31 August 1954, the son of Colin Guppy, a police officer, and Joy Guppy. He was educated at St. Patrick's College, Silverstream, and obtained a Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. In 1987, Guppy was a lecturer in clinical pharmacy at Hutt Hospital, and group chairman of the pharmacy practice department at Upper Hutt's Central Institute of Technology, while his wife, Sue, ran Guppy's Dispensary in Upper Hutt. Izzy Ford
Izzy I. Ford (née Gray; born 19 January 1974) is a New Zealand local-body politician and former rugby union player. She served as deputy mayor of Porirua from 2016 to 2022. She is married to Glynn Ford, and they have three children, including Jayden Ford, who in July 2023 was the 166th-ranked amateur golfer in the world. John Burke (mayor)
John Brian Burke (born 6 February 1946) is a former mayor of Porirua, Porirua City, Wellington Region, New Zealand. Prior to his time as mayor from 1983 to 1998, he served 12 years as a city councillor with six years from 1977 to 1983 as deputy mayor. After a 15-year absence from the city council, in 2013 and 2016 he stood for election as a city councillor in the eastern ward, and was elected. In September 2019 Burke announced he would not be seeking re-election, ending continuous public office which began in 1971. Dame Beverley Anne Wakem (born 27 January 1944) is a former Chief Ombudsman of New Zealand. Biography Wakem's background is in broadcasting, public relations, and consulting for both the public and private sectors. She was chief executive of Radio New Zealand from 1984 until 1991. In 1991, she was appointed commercial director for Wrightson Limited, soon becoming the company's general manager of human resources and corporate affairs. The Mayor of Porirua is the head of the municipal government of Porirua, New Zealand, and presides over the Porirua City Council. The mayor is directly elected using the single transferable vote electoral system. There have been six mayors since the establishment of the borough council in 1962: the current mayor is Anita Baker, who was elected in October 2019. History The locality was part the Makara County Council, abolished on 31 August 1962. The rural area became part of Hutt County, the urban area becoming Porirua Borough Council.
