2016 Washburn Ichabods Football Team
The 2016 Washburn Ichabods football team represented Washburn University in the 2016 NCAA Division II football season. The Ichabods played their home games on Foster Field in Yager Stadium at Moore Bowl in Topeka, Kansas, as they have done since 1928. 2016 was the 126th season in school history. The Ichabods were led by fifteenth-year head coach, Craig Schurig. Washburn has been a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association since 1989. Preseason The Ichabods entered the 2016 season after finishing with a 5–6 record overall and in conference play, under Schurig. On August 2, 2016 at the MIAA Football Media Day, the Ichabods were chosen to finish in 8th place in both the Coaches Poll and in the Media Poll. Craig Schurig
Craig Schurig (born March 2, 1965) is an American football coach and former player. He is the current head football coach for Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas and he held that position since the 2002 season. He is the 40th person to hold the post. He is known for turning around a once losing program to a winning program. As of the 2013 Washburn University budget, Schurig's salary is listed as $101,303. Schurig led the Washburn football program to a win in the 2004 Mineral Water Bowl. The Ichabods posted their first NCAA Division II playoff appearance and their first Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) championship in 2005. The conference championship was the first for the Ichabods since the 1983 season. Schurig earned the MIAA Coach of the Year honors for his efforts leading the Ichabods that season. The coaching staff is a group of non-athletes tied to a sports team. A coaching staff can be existent at all levels of athletics. It is led by a head coach (known as a manager or senior coach in some sports) and consists of one or more assistant coaches, physicians, massage therapists, Athletic trainers, equipment managers, nutritionists and others, all required to pass training courses for reliability. It has been suggested that when there is an upbeat and positive coaching staff with healthy relationships with the athletes, the outcome and experience of the team as a whole will benefit overall. Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field is a football stadium located in Kearney, Nebraska, U.S., on the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus.
