2016 São Toméan Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in São Tomé and Príncipe on 17 July 2016. Initial results suggested Evaristo Carvalho of Independent Democratic Action had been elected in the first round of voting, defeating incumbent President Manuel Pinto da Costa; however, the results was subsequently annulled, necessitating a second round between Carvalho and Pinto da Costa, which was held on 7 August. However, Pinto da Costa boycotted the second round after claiming the first round had been fraudulent, meaning Carvalho was elected unopposed. Electoral system The President of São Tomé and Príncipe is elected using the two-round system. If no candidate received more than 50% of the vote, a run-off between the top two candidates. Hélder Barros
Hélder Domingos Soares de Barros is a Santoméan economist, diplomat and former minister of finance and economic coordination in São Tomé and Príncipe. He was a candidate for the presidency of his country in 2011 and 2016. In his early twenties Hélder Barros contributed to the struggle for independence of the archipelago by hosting radio programs for the independence movement from Libreville, Gabon. He graduated with a M.Econ. from California Coast University, and joined the UN in 1982 in Niger. In the following decades, he worked on conflict resolution in several African countries under the mandate of the organization. Maria Das Neves
Maria das Neves Ceita Baptista de Sousa (born 1958) served as the 11th prime minister of São Tomé and Príncipe. She was a key figure in the Movement for the Liberation of São Tomé and Príncipe-Social Democratic Party (MLSTP-PSD) and became the first woman head of government in the country. Evaristo Carvalho
Evaristo do Espírito Santo Carvalho (22 October 1941 – 28 May 2022) was a São Toméan politician who served as the fourth president of São Tomé and Príncipe from 2016 to 2021. He was previously the prime minister of the country on two occasions. Political career Carvalho was prime minister of São Tomé and Príncipe from 7 July 1994 to 25 October 1994 and again from 26 September 2001 to 28 March 2002. He was a member of the Independent Democratic Action (ADI) party. Carvalho contested the 2011 São Toméan presidential election, while he was the President of the National Assembly. He had been supported in his campaign by then current Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada. Carvalho finished second in the first round with 21.8 percent of the vote, behind former president, Manuel Pinto da Costa. The two-round system (TRS), also known as runoff voting, second ballot, or ballotage, is a voting method used to elect a single candidate, where voters cast a single vote for their preferred candidate.
