North Tyneside Metropolitan Borough Council
North Tyneside Council is the local authority of North Tyneside in Tyne and Wear, England. It is a metropolitan district council, one of five in Tyne and Wear and one of 36 in the metropolitan counties of England, and provides the majority of local government services in North Tyneside. History The current local authority was first elected in 1973, a year before formally coming into its powers and prior to the creation of the Metropolitan Borough of North Tyneside on 1 April 1974. The council held its meetings at Wallsend Town Hall until it moved to new premises at Cobalt Business Park in 2008. Political control Since 2002 the council has had a Directly elected mayor, which means the party with an overall majority of councillors may not be the same party exercising executive functions. The 2016 United Kingdom local elections held on Thursday 5 May 2016 were a series of local elections which were held in 124 local councils and also saw 4 mayoral elections in England which also coincided with elections to the Scottish Parliament, the Welsh Assembly, the Northern Ireland Assembly, the London Assembly, the London mayoral election and the England and Wales Police and crime commissioners. By-elections for the Westminster seats of Ogmore and Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough were also held. These proved to be David Cameron's last local elections as leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister as he resigned two months later following the defeat of Remain in the referendum on Britain's continuing membership of the European Union which was held seven weeks later. Elections for the North Tyneside Metropolitan Council took place on 3 May 2012. North Tyneside Council is elected in thirds, which means one councillor from each three-member ward is elected each year except for every fourth year, when the mayoral election takes place. The UK Independence Party (UKIP; ) is a Eurosceptic, right-wing populist political party in the United Kingdom. Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) is a socialist electoral alliance launched in Britain for the 2010 general election. TUSC's co-founder was the RMT union general secretary Bob Crow. Members of the PCS, NUT, FBU and POA unions are on the steering committee. The biggest component section of TUSC was the RMT until they disaffiliated at the 2022 RMT AGM.
