2015–16 Meistriliiga (ice Hockey) Season
The 2015–16 Meistriliiga season was the 76th season of the Meistriliiga, the top level of ice hockey in Estonia, since the league's formation in 1934. The season started on 10 October 2015 and concluded on 19 March 2016. On 27 February 2016, Narva PSK won the title with three games to spare after a 5–1 home win over Kohtla-Järve Viru Sputnik Viru Sputnik is an Estonian ice hockey team playing in the Meistriliiga but hasn't participated in it since the 2016-17 season. Meistriliiga (ice Hockey)
The Meistriliiga (EML), also known as the Coolbet Hokiliiga for sponsorship reasons, is the top-tier ice hockey league in Estonia. The league currently consists of five teams from Estonia and two teams from Riga, Latvia. History The league was formed in the 1990–91 season. Since 1945–46, Estonian teams had participated in the Estonian SSR Championship. Prior to the country's annexation and incorporation into the Soviet Union, the Estonian Championship had been contested in interwar Estonia from 1934 to 1940. In the 2017–18 season, the league was known as the Nordic Power Hokiliiga. Narva PSK has dominated the league at the outset, winning the first six championships and eight of the first 11 seasons. Since winning their first title in 1997, Tartu Kalev-Välk has been the most consistently successful team in the Meistriliiga since the league started, having won a total of nine championships. Kohtla-Järve
Kohtla-Järve is a city and municipality in northeastern Estonia, founded in 1924 and incorporated as a town in 1946. The city is highly industrial, and is both a processor of oil shales and is a large producer of various petrochemical products. During the 1944–1991 Soviet occupation, large numbers of immigrant workers from Russia and other parts of the former USSR were brought in to populate the rapidly growing city. The population in the Kohtla-Järve area which had been, as of 1934 census, over 90% ethnic Estonian, became overwhelmingly non-Estonian in the second half of the 20th century. According to more recent data (as of 2006) 21% of the city's population are ethnic Estonians; most of the rest are Russians. Kohtla-Järve is the fifth-largest city in Estonia in terms of population. 2016 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships
The 2016 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships was the 40th Ice Hockey World Junior Championship. It was hosted in Helsinki, Finland. It began on December 26, 2015, and ended with the gold medal game on January 5, 2016. This marked the sixth time that Finland has hosted the WJC, and the hosts defeated Russia 4–3 in overtime to win their fourth title in history and second in the last three years. Belarus was relegated to Division I-A for 2017 by merit of their tenth-place finish, while Finnish right winger Jesse Puljujärvi earned MVP and top scorer honors.
