2015 Louisiana Lieutenant Gubernatorial Election
The 2015 Louisiana lieutenant gubernatorial election took place on October 24, 2015, to elect the Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana, with a runoff election held on November 21, 2015. Incumbent Republican Party (United States), Republican Lieutenant Governor Jay Dardenne did not run for re-election to a second full term in office. He instead ran for Governor. Billy Nungesser won the election defeating Kip Holden, despite a Democratic victory in the 2015 Louisiana gubernatorial election, gubernatorial election, in which John Bel Edwards defeated David Vitter by a similar margin. A general election was held in the U.S. state of Louisiana on October 24, 2015. All of Louisiana's executive officers, and both houses of the Louisiana State Legislature were up for election. Under Louisiana's jungle primary system, all candidates appeared on the same ballot, regardless of party and voters voted for any candidate, regardless of their party affiliation. Since no candidate received a majority of the vote during the primary election, a runoff election was held on November 21, 2015 between the top two candidates in the primary. Louisiana is the only state that has a jungle primary system (California and Washington have a similar "top two primary" system). United States gubernatorial elections were held in three states in 2015 as part of the 2015 United States elections. In Kentucky and Mississippi, the elections were held on November 3, and in Louisiana, as no candidate received a majority of votes at the primary election on October 24, 2015, a runoff election was held on November 21. The last regular gubernatorial elections for all three states were in 2011. Richard Joseph Gallot, Jr., known as Rick Gallot (born April 1966), is the current president of Grambling State University and was a Democratic member of the Louisiana State Senate for District 29 In the nonpartisan blanket primary held on October 22, 2011, Gallot received 12,992 votes (50.3 percent). Gallot, an African American born in Ruston, graduated from the historically black Grambling State University in Grambling and the Southern University Law Center of Baton Rouge. He is an inductee of the Southern Law Hall of Fame. In 2012, he succeeded the term-limited white Democratic Senator Joe McPherson.
