Freestyle Swimming
Freestyle is a category of swimming competition, defined by the rules of the International Swimming Federation (FINA), in which competitors are subject to a few limited restrictions on their swimming stroke. Freestyle races are the most common of all swimming competitions, with distances beginning with 50 meters (50 yards) and reaching 1500 meters (1650 yards), also known as the mile. The term 'freestyle stroke' is sometimes used as a synonym for 'front crawl', as front crawl is the fastest surface swimming stroke. It is now the most common stroke used in freestyle competitions. Susie Rodgers
Susannah Elizabeth Joy Rodgers, (born 9 August 1983) is a British Paralympic swimmer. She competes in S7 classification events and won three bronze medals at the 2012 Summer Paralympics and a gold at the 2016 Summer Paralympics. Personal life Rodgers was born on 9 August 1983 in Stockton-on-Tees, England. She was born without a fully formed arm or leg on the left side of her body. Susie was announced as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2018, a year after her retirement from professional sport in 2017. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in modern languages from the University of Newcastle, and is able to speak Catalan, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Daniela Schulte
Daniela Schulte (born 30 June 1982 in Berlin) is a German Paralympic swimmer, competing in the S11 class. Having developed a genetically caused visual impairment aged nine, Schulte began to compete in swimming for competitors with a disability at the age of 13. A year later Schulte participated in the 1996 Summer Paralympics in Atlanta, winning gold medals with both the 4x100m freestyle and 4x100m medley relays B1-3 as well as two silver medals in the 100m freestyle and 200m individual medley B1 events. At the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney, Schulte was able to add a silver medal in the 100m freestyle S11 to her tally. In 2003 Schulte gave birth to twin boys. Mary Fisher (swimmer)
Mary Elizabeth Fisher (born 16 January 1993) is a New Zealand para swimmer. She represented New Zealand at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London and the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, combined winning two gold medals, two silver medals and a bronze medal. Fisher was born in Lower Hutt and grew up in the nearby Upper Hutt suburb of Silverstream. She was born with the rare genetic condition aniridia, resulting in low vision which deteriorated as a teenager. She attended Silverstream Primary School, Maidstone Intermediate and Heretaunga College. She is a student at the Wellington campus of Massey University. Summer Mortimer
Summer Ashley Mortimer (born April 22, 1993) is a Canadian-Dutch former paraswimmer who competed internationally for Canada, and later the Netherlands national paralympic team, an artist, a performing artist, and CBC Sports personality. Mortimer won seven world-championship finals for Canada and the Netherlands, and four medals for Canada at her first Paralympic Games in London: two gold, one silver and one bronze. Mortimer competed in the 2008 Canadian Olympic Trials as an able-bodied swimmer, and retrained as a paraswimmer after a trampolining accident. Dame Sophie Frances Pascoe (born 8 January 1993) is a New Zealand para-swimmer. She has represented New Zealand at four Summer Paralympic Games from 2008 Summer Paralympics, 2008, winning a total of eleven gold medals, seven silver medals and one bronze medal, making her New Zealand's most successful Paralympian. Michelle Konkoly
Michelle Konkoly (born February 20, 1992) is a Paralympic swimmer from Pennsylvania who trains in Naples, Florida. She earned four medals including two gold medals at the 2016 Summer Paralympics and three silver medals at the 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships. Injury In January 2011, Konkoly had a serious spinal cord injury after she tried to open a window and accidentally fell out of a five-storey dorm window and landed onto a sidewalk below when she attended Georgetown University. She shattered her L2 vertebrae, broke some of her ribs and her right foot and damaged her spinal cord and had very limited movement below her waist. Ellie Cole
Ellie Victoria Cole, (born 12 December 1991) is an Australian retired Paralympic swimmer and wheelchair basketball player. After having her leg amputated due to cancer, she trained in swimming as part of her rehabilitation program and progressed more rapidly than instructors had predicted. She began competitive swimming in 2003 and first competed internationally at the 2006 IPC Swimming World Championships, where she won a silver medal.
