800 Metres
The 800 metres, or meters ( US spelling), is a common track running event. It is the shortest commonly run middle-distance running event. The 800 metres is run over two laps of an outdoor (400-metre) track and has been an Olympic event since the first modern games in 1896. During the winter track season the event is usually run by completing four laps of an indoor 200-metre track. The event was derived from the imperial measurement of a half mile (880 yards), a traditional English racing distance. 800m is 4.67m less than a half mile. The event combines aerobic endurance with anaerobic conditioning and sprint speed, so the 800m athlete has to combine training for both. Runners in this event are occasionally fast enough to also compete in the 400 metres but more commonly have enough endurance to 'double up' in the 1500m. Paul Blake (athlete)
Paul John Blake (born 15 January 1990) is a British athlete who competes in T36 middle-distance events. Blake competed at the 2012 Summer Paralympics where he won a silver and bronze medal in the 400m T36 and 800m T36 respectively. He followed this up with two gold medals at the 2013 and 2015 World Championships, both in his favoured 800m event. Personal history Born in Dorchester, Dorset, Blake developed cerebral palsy after being deprived of blood in the womb. Blake's father, also called Paul, is an actor, best known for playing the bounty hunter Greedo in '' Star Wars'' (1977), while his mother Kate is a former ballet dancer with the Royal Ballet. Liu Chengming (athlete)
Liu Chengming (born 20 March 1987) is a Paralympian athlete from China competing mainly in T54 classification sprint events. Athletics career Liu first represented China as a wheelchair racer at the 2010 Asian Para Games in Guangzhou, winning an individual gold in the 400m (T54) and a team gold with the men's 4 × 400 m relay (T53/54). The next year he competed at the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand. In Christchurch he took two more gold medals, again in the 400m sprint and the men's 4 × 400 m (T53/54). The next year Liu appeared at his first Summer Paralympic, the 2012 Games in London. He was again part of the Chinese team that took gold in the men's 400 metre relay, and also won an individual medal; bronze in the 100m sprint. T54 (classification)
T54 is a disability sport classification for disability athletics in the track and jump events. The class includes people with spinal cord injuries who compete using a wheelchair in track events. They have paraplegia, but have normal hand and arm function, normal or limited trunk function, and no leg function. This class includes CP-ISRA classes CP3 and CP4, and some athletes in ISOD classes A1, A2 and A3. Definition This classification is for track and jump events in disability athletics. Pierre Fairbank
Pierre Fairbank (born 27 July 1971) is a Paralympian athlete from France and New Caledonia competing mainly in category T53 sprint events. Fairbank first competed in the Paralympics in 2000 in Sydney where he won a gold in the T53 200m, a silver in the T53 400m and a bronze in the T53 800m, he also competed in the T54 Marathon. Li Huzhao (; born January 18, 1989) is a Paralympian athlete from China competing mainly in category T53 sprint events. He competed in the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China. Brent Lakatos
Brent Lakatos (born 1 June 1980) is a Canadian wheelchair racer in the T53 classification. Lakatos has represented Canada at three Summer Paralympics, and at the 2012 Games he won three silver medals in the sprint and mid-distance events. In 2013 Lakatos reached the pinnacle of his sport when he collected four gold medals at the IPC Athletics World Championships and became world champion at his classification in the 100m, 200m and 400m events. Personal history Lakatos came from a sporting family and was swimming by the age of four. When he was six years-old a freak ice-skating accident resulted in the formation of a blood clot on his spine that left his legs paralyzed. T53 (classification)
T53 is disability sport classification for disability athletics. The class includes people with a number of different types of disabilities including spinal cord injuries. People in this class have full use of their arms but have no or limited trunk function. Similar classifications are T51, T52, and T54. People in this class have a functional upper limbs, but limited trunk usage and limited lower limb functionality. During classification, they both undergo a bench test of muscle strength and demonstrate their skills in athletics. People in this class include Tanni Grey-Thompson (GBR), Samantha Kinghorn (GBR), Angie Ballard (AUS) and Richard Colman (AUS). Definition This classification is for disability athletics. T37 is a disability sport classification for disability athletics in track and jump events. It includes people who have coordination impairments such as hypertonia, ataxia and athetosis. It is the athletics equivalent of the more general CP7 classification. Definition This classification is for disability athletics in track and jump events. This classification is one of seven classifications for athletes with cerebral palsy. Similar classifications are T32, T33, T34, T35, T36, and T38. The Australian Paralympic Committee defines this classification as being for "Moderate to minimal hemiplegia (i.e. one half of the body affected – arm and leg on same side). Michael Gerard McKillop (born 27 January 1990 in Ballymena, Northern Ireland) is an Irish middle distance runner. He competes in the T37 disability sport classification, as he has a mild form of cerebral palsy. He won the 800m title at the 2006 IPC Athletics World Championships, clocking just over 2:02. and he represented Ireland at the 2008 Summer Paralympics, winning a gold medal at the T37 800 m clipping almost three seconds off his previous mark as he strode to an emphatic win in 1:59.41.
