2015 Football League One Play-off Final
The 2015 Football League One play-off Final was an association football match which was played on 24 May 2015 at Wembley Stadium, London, between Preston North End and Swindon Town to determine the third and final team to gain promotion from League One to the Championship. The top two teams of the 2014–15 League One season gained automatic promotion to the Championship, while the teams placed from third to sixth place in the table partook in play-off semi-finals; the winners of these semi-finals competed for the final place for the 2015–16 season in the Championship. It was the first time that Preston had ever been promoted through the play-offs, having failed in their nine previous attempts and losing in all three final appearances. Mark Stephen Howard (born 21 September 1986) is an English professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Wrexham. Born in Southwark, London, Howard was part of Arsenal's youth team, but having failed to make the step up to the senior squad he departed for Cardiff City. Nathan William Byrne (born 5 June 1992) is an English professional footballer who plays for Charlotte FC. He can play as either a wing back or a right-back. Byrne began his professional career with Tottenham but never made a first team appearance for the club before leaving to join League One Swindon Town in 2013. Samuel Derek Ricketts (born 11 October 1981) is a professional football coach and former player. As a player, his favoured position was at full back, where he was able to play either side as well as being able to operate at the centre of defence. A volley is an air-borne strike in association football, where a player's foot meets and directs the ball in an angled direction before it has time to reach the ground. A volley can be extremely hard to aim and requires good foot-eye coordination and timing. In general, the volley requires that the player strike the ball with the front of his foot, with the toes pointing downward, ankle locked, and the knee lifted.
