2014 Venetian Independence Referendum
The Venetian independence referendum of 2014 was an unofficial, non-binding, online and privately organised poll held among residents of Veneto, one of the 20 regions of Italy, 16–21 March 2014. The vote, known also as the "digital plebiscite" or "''Plebiscito.eu''", was promoted by Plebiscite 2013, a Venetian nationalist organisation led by Gianluca Busato. Background Turnout and results According to ''Plebiscito.eus staff, 2.36 million Venetians (63.2% of all eligible voters) participated in the online referendum and 89.1% of them (that is to say 56.6% of all eligible voters) voted "yes" to independence. P2013 proclaimed Veneto's independence from Italy in Treviso on the night of 21 March. Luca Zaia
Luca Zaia (born 27 March 1968) is a Venetian and Venetist politician, who has been President of Veneto since 2010. Prior to that, Zaia was President of the Province of Treviso from 1998 to 2005, Vice President of Veneto from 2005 to 2008 and Minister of Agriculture in Silvio Berlusconi's fourth cabinet from 2008 to 2010. North-East Union
The North-East Union (''Unione Nord-Est'') was a Venetist political party active in Veneto. The party was formed in 1996 by splinters from Liga Veneta–Lega Nord led by Adriano Bertaso, a regional councillor. In the 1996 general election the party won 2.0% of the vote for the Chamber of Deputies, by running only in the Verona–Padua–Vicenza–Rovigo constituency (3.4%), and 2.6% for the Senate. In 1999 Bertaso led the Union into the Liga Veneta Repubblica (LVR) of Fabrizio Comencini, but soon after left it and re-organized his party, which is currently a minor political force in Veneto. Stefano Valdegamberi (born 6 May 1970 in Tregnago) is an Italian politician from Veneto. Political career A member of Christian Democracy (DC) since the late 1980s, Valdegamberi joined the Christian Democratic Centre (CCD) in 1994, after DC's disbanding. He was twice elected mayor of Badia Calavena. He was first elected to the Regional Council of Veneto in 2005 for the Union of Christian and Centre Democrats (UDC) and was regional minister of Local and Social Affairs in Galan III Government (2005–2010). Re-elected in 2010, he was appointed floor leader of the re-branded Union of the Centre (UdC). On 2 April 2013 Valdegamberi introduced a bill in order to call a referendum on Veneto's independence by the end of the year. The party was launched on 15 November 2013 by a group of dissidents of The People of Freedom (PdL) who opposed the party's transformation into Forza Italia (FI), which would take place the day after. The Regional Council of Veneto (''Consiglio Regionale del Veneto'') is the regional parliament of Veneto. The Council, which has its seat at Palazzo Ferro Fini, located along the Grand Canal in Venice. was first elected in 1970, when ordinary regions were established, twenty-two years after the Italian Constitution envisioned them in 1948.
