The 2014 The Masters Grand Slam of Curling, Masters Grand Slam of Curling was held from October 28 to November 2 at the Selkirk Recreational Complex in Selkirk, Manitoba, Selkirk, Manitoba. It was the first men's Grand Slam (curling), Grand Slam event of the season and the second women's Grand Slam event of the season. In the women's final, Valerie Sweeting of Edmonton won her first Grand Slam title with a 5–4 victory over Olympic silver medallists Margaretha Sigfridsson of Sweden. In the men's final, Brad Gushue of St. John's won his first Grand Slam title with an 8–6 victory over Mike McEwen (curler), Mike McEwen of Winnipeg. Selkirk, Manitoba
Selkirk is a city in the western Canadian province of Manitoba, located on the Red River about northeast of the provincial capital Winnipeg. It has a population of 10,504 as of the 2021 census. The mainstays of the local economy are tourism, a steel mill, and a psychiatric hospital. A vertical lift bridge over the Red River connects Selkirk with the smaller town of East Selkirk. Peter De Cruz
Peter Vincent de Cruz (born 4 January 1990) is a Swiss curler. He is an Olympic bronze medallist for Switzerland, having skipped his Swiss rink to a third place finish at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. While de Cruz is the skip of his team, he throws second stones. As a junior, De Cruz skipped the Swiss team at both the 2010 and 2011 World Junior Curling Championships. He won the gold medal in 2010, defeating Scotland, skipped by Ally Fraser. In 2011, he took Switzerland to the finals once again, but this time lost to Sweden (skipped by Oskar Eriksson) in the final. Benoît François Dominique Schwarz (born 19 August 1991) is a Swiss curler. He currently throws fourth stones for the Peter de Cruz rink. He won gold medal with the Swiss team at the 2013 European Curling Championships in Stavanger and a bronze medal at the 2014 World Men's Curling Championship in Beijing. Ryan Kuhn
Ryan Kuhn (born December 26, 1982) is a Canadian curler from Vernon, British Columbia. Career Kuhn won the 2000 Canadian Junior Curling Championships playing second on a rink skipped by his brother Brad. The team then went on to win the 2000 World Junior Curling Championships. After having won the 2000 British Columbia Junior Championships, Kuhn won again in 2002 as a skip. He led his team of Steve Bauer, Tyrel Griffith and Cameron Watt to an 8–4 record at the 2002 Canadian Juniors, missing the playoffs in 4th place. Kuhn played in one season on the World Curling Tour with his brother in 2005–06. He returned to the tour in 2014 as a member of the Jim Cotter rink, replacing John Morris. Over the course of the season, he played in two Grand Slams, the 2014 Masters of Curling and the 2014 Canadian Open of Curling, losing in the quarter finals in the latter. Jim Cotter (curler)
James H. Cotter (born October 15, 1974 in Kamloops, British Columbia) is a Canadian curler from Vernon, British Columbia. Career Cotter grew up in Kamloops, playing both curling and baseball as a youth. As a high school student, he won three provincial high school championships (1990, 1991, 1993). He won two provincial junior crowns, in 1990 and in 1995. At the 1990 Canadian Junior Curling Championships, he skipped the B.C. team to a 6-5 round robin record. This put them in a five-way tie for third place. They would be eliminated from the playoffs however, when they lost their first tie-breaker match to Nova Scotia's Brian Fowlie. Five years later in his last year of eligibility, Cotter was back, skipping the B.C. team at the 1995 Canadian Junior Curling Championships. This time, he would finish with a better, 7-4 record, but it was only good enough for fourth place, and they missed the playoffs.
