200 Metres
The 200 metres, or 200-meter dash, is a sprint running event. On an outdoor 400 metre racetrack, the race begins on the curve and ends on the home straight, so a combination of techniques is needed to successfully run the race. A slightly shorter race, called the '' stadion'' and run on a straight track, was the first recorded event at the ancient Olympic Games. The 200 m places more emphasis on speed endurance than shorter sprint distances as athletes predominantly rely on anaerobic energy system during the 200 m sprint. Similarly to other sprint distances, the 200 m begins from the starting blocks. When the sprinters adopt the 'set' position in the blocks they are able to adopt a more efficient starting posture and isometrically preload their muscles. This enables them to stride forwards more powerfully when the race begins and start faster. Irmgard Bensusan
Irmgard Bensusan (born 24 January 1991) is a South African born Paralympic sprinter who now competes for Germany, mainly in T44 classification events. Bensusan competed at the 2016 Summer Paralympics where she won three silver medals in the 100, 200 and 400 metre sprints. Personal Bensusan was born on 24 January 1991 in Pretoria, South Africa. She studied accounting at the University of Johannesburg. Athletics career Bensusan first took up athletics as an able-bodied competitor whilst living in South Africa. In 2009 whilst competing in a hurdle event, she tore the nerves in her right knee. The injury resulted in paralysis in her right leg below her knee. Bensusan looked at becoming classified as a para-sport athlete but was unable to gain a classification from the South African Paralympic Committee. Iris Pruysen
Iris Pruysen (born 26 November 1987) is a Dutch retired Paralympic athlete who competed in sprinting and long jump at international elite competitions. She is a World champion and a European bronze medalist in long jump. Pruysen lost her lower right leg following a gas explosion on a boat at a sailing camp in IJsselmeer. Sophie Kamlish
Sophie Kamlish (born 20 August 1996) is a British Paralympic athlete who competes in sprint events in T44 events. She represented Great Britain at the 2012 Summer Paralympics and 2016 Summer Paralympics. Early life Kamlish was born in Camden, London in 1996. She was born with a right foot that was severely turned in, for which a splint was fitted to straighten it. Despite this her right leg was significantly shorter than her left and when Kamlish was nine her doctors suggested the fitting of a gradual extension frame to lengthen her leg. Kamlish was already in significant pain and there was no guarantee that the frame would work so she and her family opted for a below the knee amputation. Marlene Van Gansewinkel
Marlene van Gansewinkel (born 11 March 1995) is a Dutch Paralympic athlete. In 2021, she won the gold medal in both the women's 100 metres T64 and 200 metres T64 events at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan. She also won the bronze medal in the women's long jump T64 event. In 2016, she won the bronze medal in the women's long jump T44 event at the Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She has also won medals in the long jump and in sprinting events at the World Para Athletics Championships and the World Para Athletics European Championships.
