2014 Galway County Council Election
An election to all 39 seats on Galway County Council took place on 23 May 2014 as part of the 2014 Irish local elections, an increase from 30 seats at the 2009 election. County Galway was divided into 5 local electoral areas (LEAs) to elect councillors for a five-year term of office on the electoral system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV). In addition, the town councils of Ballinasloe, Loughrea and Tuam were all abolished. Fine Gael remained the largest party in terms of votes while having the same seats as Fianna Fáil. Fine Gael lost 1 seat overall, in Loughrea, while Fianna Fáil made 5 gains; 1 each in Ballinasloe, Connemara, Athenry-Oranmore and 2 in Loughrea. Galway County Council
Galway County Council ( ga, Comhairle Chontae na Gaillimhe) is the authority responsible for local government in County Galway, Ireland. As a county council, it is governed by the Local Government Act 2001. The council is responsible for housing and community, roads and transportation, urban planning and development, amenity and culture, and environment. The council has 39 elected members. Elections are held every five years and are by single transferable vote. The head of the council has the title of Cathaoirleach (Chairperson). The county administration is headed by a Chief Executive, Jim Cullen. The county seat is at Áras an Chontae (County Hall) in Galway city. Anne Rabbitte (born 11 October 1973) is an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who has served as a Minister of State since July 2020. She has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Galway East constituency since 2016. She was a member of Galway County Council from 2014 for the Loughrea local electoral area until her election to the Dáil in 2016. In May 2016, she was appointed to the Fianna Fáil Front Bench, as Spokesperson for Children and Youth Affairs. In April 2019, Rabbitte criticised plans to excavate the site of the former Bon Secours Mother and Baby Home in Tuam, describing it as "a wilful waste of public money", and questioned if the intention was to dig up every cillín (burial ground for stillborn and unbaptised infants) in Ireland. Renua
Renua Ireland, commonly called Renua, is a fringe list of political parties in the Republic of Ireland, political party in Ireland. The party was launched on 13 March 2015, with former Fine Gael Teachta Dála, TD Lucinda Creighton as founding leader. Prior to its launch it had used the slogan Reboot Ireland. The name ''Renua'' is intended to suggest both the English ''Renew'' and the Irish ''Ré Nua'' "New Era". Renua was founded primarily by former members of Fine Gael who left that party because they refused to endorse Fine Gael's pro-abortion stance. A by-election was held in the Dáil Éireann Roscommon–South Leitrim constituency in Ireland on Friday, 10 October 2014, following the election of Independent Teachta Dála (TD) Luke 'Ming' Flanagan to the European Parliament. Tom McHugh (mayor)
Tom McHugh, County Councillor and Mayor of County Galway 2009-10. A native of Kilcloughans, Tuam, McHugh had worked in the construction and trade industries since the 1960s. Mary Hoade
Mary Hoade is a Fianna Fáil Councillor for the Tuam Local Electoral Area on Galway County Council. A native of Headford she was first elected in the 1999 Irish local elections and was re-elected again in the following elections in 2004. Following boundary changes she moved electoral areas to Tuam and was successfully returned again in the 2009 Irish local elections. In 2014 she polled 1,886 first preferences and was elected to the fourth seat exceeding the quota. After these elections, she was selected as Mayor of Galway as part of a Fianna Fáil-Fine Gael pact. Michael Fitzmaurice (politician)
Michael Fitzmaurice (born 18 September 1969) is an Irish Independent politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Roscommon–Galway constituency since the 2016 general election, and previously from 2014 to 2016 for the Roscommon–South Leitrim constituency. Before becoming a politician, Fitzmaurice used to run an agricultural and turf contracting business. He is the chair of the Turf Cutters and Contractors Association. Seán Canney
Seán Canney (born 6 April 1960) is an Irish Independent politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Galway East constituency since 2016. He served as a Minister of State from 2016 to 2017 and again from 2018 to 2020. A native of Belclare, Tuam, County Galway. Canney was campaign manager for his brother-in-law, Paddy McHugh, in the 2002 general election, in which McHugh gained a seat in the Galway East constituency. As an Independent candidate, Canney was elected to Galway County Council in 2004, on his first attempt. He was re-elected in each of the subsequent local elections in 2009 and 2014. Michael Fahy
Michael Fahy (1951 – 2 April 2019) was an Irish farmer, and a Fianna Fáil and sometime Independent member of Galway County Council. From Ardrahan and first elected to the council in 1979, he resigned from Fianna Fáil in 2004 when under investigation for misappropriation of funds from the council. He served a prison sentence for this in 2007, but his conviction was overturned in 2011. He rejoined Fianna Fáil in 2018. Early career Fahy owned a 70-acre farm and prior to his trial worked as a salesman for New Ireland Assurance. He was appointed a Peace Commissioner in 1978, and was on the visiting committee of Limerick Prison until 2004. He ran in Galway West as an independent in the 1987 general election, but later rejoined Fianna Fáil. In the 2004 local elections, Fahy was criticised for using thousands of prepaid Oireachtas envelopes to write to voters.
