2014 European Parliament Election In Greece
European Parliament elections were held in Greece on 25 May 2014 to elect the 21 Greek members of the European Parliament. The number of seats allocated to Greece declined from 22 to 21, as a result of the 2013 reapportionment of seats in the European Parliament. According to Jim Yardley of ''The New York Times'', "the vote has become a ''de facto'' referendum on the governing coalition and a test of whether ordinary citizens believe the government's assertion that the country is finally on the upswing." European Parliament
The European Parliament (EP) is one of the legislative bodies of the European Union and one of its seven institutions. Together with the Council of the European Union (known as the Council and informally as the Council of Ministers), it adopts European legislation, following a proposal by the European Commission. The Parliament is composed of 705 members (MEPs). It represents the second-largest democratic electorate in the world (after the Parliament of India), with an electorate of 375 million eligible voters in 2009. Since 1979, the Parliament has been directly elected every five years by the citizens of the European Union through universal suffrage. Voter turnout in parliamentary elections decreased each time after 1979 until 2019, when voter turnout increased by eight percentage points, and rose above 50% for the first time since 1994. The Party of Friendship, Equality and Peace ( el, Κόμμα Ισότητας, Ειρήνης και Φιλίας, abbr. Κ.Ι.Ε.Φ., KIEF; tr, Dostluk-Eşitlik-Barış Partisi, DEBP) is a Greek political party founded to represent the interests of native Muslims of Greece. The recognised Muslim minority in Greece consists mainly of Pomaks, Muslims of Turkish and Bulgarian origin, and Roma. Overview The party was created on 13 September 1991 by Sadik Achmet, who presided over it until his death in 1995. Achmet was succeeded by his widow Isik Achmet (Işık Ahmet) who led until 1999. Democratic Left (, , DIMAR) was a social-democratic political party in Greece. Formed as a split from Synaspismós, DIMAR was a minor party supporting the Samaras cabinet from 21 June 2012 to 21 June 2013. After being a member of the Democratic Alignment (DIMAR) and the Movement for Change (KINAL), it affiliated to Syriza in 2019. The party was dissolved in 2022. The Greek Ecologists ( el, Έλληνες Οικολόγοι, translit=Ellines Ιkoloyi) (previously Union of Ecologists, el, Ένωση Οικολόγων, translit=Enosi Ιkoloyon) is a Greek "fringe" and "bizarre ecological party". The party's president is Dimosthenis Vergis, a former auto-worker, trade unionist, journalist, and peace activist. Vergis has been described as a "self-styled ecologist" and "a self-styled, modern-day Dionysus – God of wine, revelry and fertility". Vergis usually deploys naked female party workers in his campaigns and has posed nude for campaign posters and pamphlets, flirting "with any female journalist that comes within groping distance". He supports the legalisation of cannabis and unrestricted nudism. Recreate Greece ( el, Δημιουργία, Ξανά, translit=Dimiourgia, Xana, , ) is a Greek right-wing political party, which has adopted an ideology heavily focused on anti-immigration, anti-Islam and anti-communism. History Founded in December 2011, it is led by Thanos Tzimeros and is self-identified as a citizen-centered political movement, with emphasis on the rebuilding of the Greek state. Drassi (, "Action") was a liberal political party in Greece. The party was founded in 2009 by Stefanos Manos and was led by former New Democracy member Theodoros Skylakakis. The party had no representation in the Hellenic Parliament or European Parliament. Drassi was a member of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) party. History Stefanos Manos left New Democracy (ND) in 1999 to found The Liberals, before later running on ND and Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) electoral lists in 2000 and 2004 respectively.
