2013 Boston Mayoral Election
The 2013 Boston mayoral election occurred on Tuesday, November 5, 2013. Incumbent mayor Thomas Menino had declined to run for re-election to a sixth term. A non-partisan preliminary election was held on Tuesday, September 24, 2013. 12 candidates made the ballot to replace Menino, with state representative Marty Walsh and city councilor John R. Connolly advancing to the general election. Walsh was elected to his first term, defeating Connolly by 3% of the vote, and was inaugurated on Monday, January 6, 2014. Background Incumbent mayor Thomas Menino had held office ever since ascending to the mayoralty following the resignation of Raymond Flynn in 1993. In 2013, Menino opted against seeking what would have been his sixth elected term as mayor. He announced his decision not to seek reelection on March 27, 2013. Martin Joseph Walsh (born April 10, 1967) is an American politician and former union official. He has been the 29th United States Secretary of Labor since March 23, 2021. John Barros
John F. Barros (born 1973) is an American politician, businessman, and civic organizer who was formerly the chief of economic development for the City of Boston. He also served as the executive director of the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative. He unsuccessfully ran for mayor of Boston in 2013 and 2021. Charlotte Golar Richie (born December 11, 1958 in Brooklyn) serves as the senior vice president for public policy, advocacy and government relations for YouthBuild USA. She was a candidate for the mayor of Boston in the 2013 election. Early life Charlotte Golar graduated from Rutgers University and then tried her hand at acting, appearing off-Broadway and in minor roles on soap operas. She spent two years with the Peace Corps in Kenya teaching English to schoolchildren, spurring an interest in journalism and public service. Robert Consalvo (born July 16, 1969) is a Massachusetts State Representative, the former chief of staff for Boston Public Schools, and a former member of the Boston City Council.
