Football In Paraguay
Football is by far the most popular sport in Paraguay. Paraguay's national team has played at eight FIFA World Cup competitions and has won two Copa América tournaments. Olimpia Asunción is the country's most successful club in domestic and international competitions. Paraguay's football leagues are divided into four divisions. In 2020, Paraguay's top-tier was ranked 8th in the world by the IFFHS. History Football arrived to Paraguay in the late 1800s. There are differing versions as to how this happened. The most commonly held account is that of William Paats. Estadio Mateo Flores
The Estadio Nacional Doroteo Guamuch Flores is a multi-use national stadium in Guatemala City, the largest venue in Guatemala. It was built in 1948, to host the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1950, and was renamed after long-distance runner Doroteo Guamuch Flores, winner of the 1952 Boston Marathon. It has a capacity of 26,000 seats. Used mostly for football (soccer) matches, the stadium has hosted the majority of the home matches of the Guatemala national football team throughout its history, and is the home of local football club Comunicaciones F.C. The venue is operated by the '' Confederación Deportiva Autónoma de Guatemala'' (CDAG). 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualification (CONMEBOL)
The South American Zone of 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification saw nine teams competing for 4 or 5 berths in the finals. Brazil automatically qualified for the World Cup as the host nation so were not involved in CONMEBOL qualifying. Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador and Uruguay advanced to the World Cup. Format The format for CONMEBOL's 2014 World Cup qualifying tournament was identical to the previous four editions. All CONMEBOL national teams played against each other twice on a home-and-away basis in a single group for 4 or 5 allotted berths. The top four teams automatically qualified for the finals. The fifth-placed team competed in the intercontinental play-offs against the fifth-placed team from the AFC's World Cup qualifying tournament. The order of matches was identical to that of the 2002, 2006 and 2010 tournaments. Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium, commonly known as RFK Stadium and originally known as District of Columbia Stadium, is a defunct multi-purpose stadium in Washington, D.C. Hernán Arsenio Pérez González (born 25 February 1989) is a Paraguayan professional footballer who plays as a right winger for Unión Comercio and the Paraguay national team. Club career Early years Pérez was born in Fernando de la Mora, Asunción. After playing for two other youth clubs he finished his development with Tacuary, where he made his Paraguayan Primera División debut in 2007. Subsequently, Pérez was signed by Club Libertad in the same league, appearing rarely for them due to a serious right knee injury. Jonathan Fabbro
Jonathan Fabbro (born 16 January 1982) is an Argentine-born Paraguayan convicted felon and a former footballer who played as an attacking midfielder. In 2019, he was sentenced to fourteen years in jail for abuse of children. Born in Argentina, he became a naturalised citizen of Paraguay and played for its national football team. He is the brother of former footballer DarÃo Fabbro. Óscar René Cardozo MarÃn (; born 20 May 1983) is a Paraguayan professional footballer who plays as a striker for Club Libertad and the Paraguay national team. Known for his powerful left-foot shot and free-kick skills, he first gained attention whilst playing for Newell's Old Boys, which led to a move to Benfica in 2007.
