2012 Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council Election
The 2012 Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council election took place on 3 May 2012 to elect members of Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council in the West Midlands, England. This was on the same day as other 2012 United Kingdom local elections. In the ward of Great Bridge, the Conservative Party was criticised for fielding a candidate who had the same name as the Labour Party councillor. Due to being elected 'in thirds', councillors elected at the 2008 Sandwell Council election were defending their seats in 2012. The Labour Party won every seat, increasing their majority. Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council
Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council was created in 1974 to administer the newly formed Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell, in the West Midlands county of England. The council offices are located at the Council House, Freeth Street, Oldbury town centre, which opened in 1989. Sandwell is divided into 24 Wards and is represented by 72 ward councillors. Elections to the council take place in three out of every four years, with one-third of the seats being contested at each election. West Midlands (county)
West Midlands is a metropolitan county in the West Midlands Region, England, with a 2021 population of 2,919,600, making it the second most populous county in England after Greater London. It was created in 1974 by the Local Government Act 1972, from parts of Staffordshire, Worcestershire and Warwickshire. The county is a NUTS 2 region within the wider NUTS 1 region of the same name. Great Bridge, West Midlands
Great Bridge is a village in the Sandwell, Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell. It is situated in Tipton, near the border of West Bromwich, and it is within the metropolitan county of the West Midlands (county), West Midlands. Origins and history The place name, ''Great Bridge'' comes from Old English 'grēot' (grit or gravelly - meaning a stream with a gravelly bed), with the later addition of 'Bridge' - when a bridge was first built over the stream. There are several watercourses in England with the name 'Greet', all from this origin. The stream is thought to be the Oldbury, West Midlands, Oldbury arm of the River Tame, West Midlands, River Tame, known to the Anglo-Saxons, early English in this area as 'grēot' (Greets Green also gets its name from the watercourse). 2008 Sandwell Council Election
The 2008 Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council election took place on 1 May 2008 to elect members of Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council in the West Midlands, England. One third of the council was up for election and the Labour Party stayed in overall control of the council. After the election, the composition of the council was: *Labour 49 * Conservative 14 * Liberal Democrat 5 * British National Party 2 *Independent 2 Background Before the election Labour ran the council with 52 of the 72 seats, compared to 11 for the Conservatives, 5 Liberal Democrats, 2 British National Party and 2 independents. This meant the Conservatives could not gain control of the council whatever the results, despite Labour defending 17 of the 24 seats being contested. Sandwell is a metropolitan borough of the West Midlands county in England. The borough is named after the Sandwell Priory, and spans a densely populated part of the West Midlands conurbation. According to Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council, the borough comprises the six amalgamated towns of Oldbury, Rowley Regis, Smethwick, Tipton, Wednesbury, and West Bromwich, although these places consist of numerous smaller settlements and localities.
