2012 Portland, Oregon City Commission Election
The 2012 Portland City Commission elections were held on May 15, 2012, and November 6, 2012. Steve Novick won position 4 outright by receiving over 50% of the vote and avoided a runoff. Amanda Fritz won election to position 1 during the runoff election. Position 1 Incumbent Amanda Fritz barely won the primary election with 45.40%. Because she did not receive over 50% of the votes, she proceeded to a runoff election with runner-up Mary Nolan. Government Of Portland, Oregon
The Government of Portland, Oregon is based on a city commission government system. Elected officials include the mayor, commissioners, and a city auditor. The mayor and commissioners (members of City Council) are responsible for legislative policy and oversee the various bureaus that oversee the day-to-day operation of the city. Portland began using a commission form of government in 1913 following a public vote on May 3 of that year. Each elected official serves a four-year term, without term limits. Each city council member is elected at-large. In 2022, Portland residents approved a ballot measure to replace the commission form of government with a 12-member council elected in four districts using single transferable vote, with a professional city manager appointed by a directly-elected mayor, with the first elections to be held in 2024. Amanda Fritz
Amanda Fritz (born April 1958) is a British-American politician and retired psychiatric nurse from the U.S. state of Oregon. Before being elected to Portland's City Council in 2008, Fritz was a neighborhood activist and seven-year member of the Portland Planning Commission. She was also the first candidate to win public financing under Portland's Clean Elections system in 2006, though she lost to incumbent Dan Saltzman in the first round of that year's election. She was elected to City Council in the November 2008 election. She succeeded Commissioner Sam Adams, who vacated the seat to run for mayor. Mary Nolan (politician)
Mary Therese Nolan (born November 28, 1954) is a Democratic politician from the U.S. state of Oregon. She represented District 36 (formerly District 11) in the Oregon House of Representatives from 2001 to 2013, and served as the majority leader from 2008 to 2010. She ran unsuccessfully for the Portland City Council in 2012. She came back into office in 2020, when she was elected as one of the councilors for the Portland-area regional government, Metro. Personal life and education Nolan was born in Chicago, Illinois. She is married to Mark Gardiner with one child. Teressa Raiford (born 1970) is an American activist and politician in Portland, Oregon, Portland, Oregon. She founded the local Black people, Black-led non-profit Don't Shoot Portland. Activism When Raiford was a child, her grandparents' restaurant was the site of a racist action in which Portland Police Bureau, Portland police officers threw dead possums onto the business' doorstep. Charles Randall ‘Randy’ Leonard (born 1952) is a politician in the U.S. state of Oregon. He was a member of the Oregon Legislative Assembly from 1993 to 2002 and served as a city commissioner in Portland (a member of the Portland City Council) from 2002 through 2012. The 2008 United States Senate election in Oregon was held on November 4, 2008. Incumbent Republican U.S. Senator Gordon H. Smith sought reelection to a third term. Smith was the only Republican Senator from the West Coast (excluding Alaska) and the only Republican holding statewide office in Oregon. He was opposed by Democrat Jeff Merkley, the Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives, and David Brownlow of the Constitution Party of Oregon. On Tuesday, November 6, 2012, an election was held in Portland, Oregon, to elect the mayor. Charlie Hales was elected, defeating Jefferson Smith. Incumbent mayor Sam Adams did not seek a second term. Portland uses a nonpartisan system for local elections, in which all voters are eligible to participate. All candidates are listed on the ballot without any political party affiliation.
