2012 North Ayrshire Council Election
The 2012 North Ayrshire Council election took place on 3 May 2012 to elect members of North Ayrshire Council. The election used the eight wards created as a result of the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, with each ward electing three or four councillors using the single transferable vote system form of proportional representation, with 30 Councillors being elected. The election saw the Scottish National Party make further advances by gaining four seats to become the largest party on the Council while also increasing their vote share significantly. Labour lost one seat to become the second largest party on the Council. Independents gained a seat to have a total of six members. The Conservatives lost two-thirds of their former seats while the Liberal Democrats were wiped out, losing both their seats. North Ayrshire Council

Garnock Valley (ward)
Garnock Valley is one of the nine electoral wards of North Ayrshire Council. Created in 2022, the ward elects five councillors using the single transferable vote electoral system and covers an area with a population of 20,423 people. Boundaries The ward was created following the 2019 Reviews of Electoral Arrangements which were instigated following the implementation of the Islands (Scotland) Act 2018. The review coincided with the introduction of the Scottish Elections (Reform) Act 2020 which allowed for the creation of five-member wards. Garnock Valley was formed from two previous wards, taking in all of the former Kilbirnie and Beith ward and the eastern half of the former Dalry and West Kilbride ward. Dalry and West Kilbride was one of the 10 Wards and electoral divisions of the United Kingdom, wards used to elect members of North Ayrshire Council. Created in 2007 following the Fourth Statutory Reviews of Electoral Arrangements, the ward elected three councillors using the single transferable vote electoral system. As a result of the Islands (Scotland) Act 2018, the ward was abolished in 2022. The ward latterly produced strong results for the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party, Conservatives but was previously split between the Scottish National Party (SNP), Conservatives and Independent (politician), independents. Kilwinning (ward)
Kilwinning is one of the nine wards used to elect members of the North Ayrshire council. Created in 2007 to cover the town of Kilwinning, it elects four councillors. Irene Oldfather
Irene Hamilton-Oldfather (born 1954 in Glasgow) is a Scottish Labour Party politician. She was the Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the Cunninghame South constituency from 1999 until 2011, when she was defeated by the SNP's Margaret Burgess. During her time in Parliament, Oldfather served primarily on the European and External Relations Committee, acting as Convener for parts of both the 1999 and 2007 Sessions, and as Deputy Convener between 2003 and 2007. She was also co-chair of the Parliament's working group on prescription drug dependency. She was a member of North Ayrshire Council, being first elected in 1995, but was defeated in the 2017 Scottish local elections. She served as the council's vice-chair for education. Irvine East (ward)
Irvine East is one of the nine wards used to elect members of the North Ayrshire council. It was originally created in 2007 and returned four councillors, covering eastern parts of Irvine, i.e everything east of the A78 road, apart from the south-eastern industrial area around Drybridge and Shewalton. A national boundary review prior to the 2017 local elections led to a new ward, Irvine South being created, the East ward losing the Broomlands and Dreghorn areas, and one seat. A further re-organisation for the 2022 election in relation to the Islands (Scotland) Act 2018 did not affect the Irvine wards. In 2020, the population was 12,542. 2016 Scottish Parliament Election
The 2016 Scottish parliament election was held on Thursday, 5 May 2016 to elect 129 members to the Scottish Parliament. It was the fifth election held since the devolved parliament was established in 1999. It was the first parliamentary election in Scotland in which 16 and 17 year olds were eligible to vote, under the provisions of the Scottish Elections (Reduction of Voting Age) Act. It was also the first time the three largest parties were led by women. Parliament went into dissolution on 24 March 2016, allowing the official period of campaigning to get underway. Cunninghame South (Scottish Parliament Constituency)
Cunninghame South (Gaelic: ''Coineagan a Deas'') is a constituency of the Scottish Parliament ( Holyrood) covering part of the council area of North Ayrshire. It elects one Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) by the first past the post method of election, and is one of ten constituencies in the West Scotland electoral region. The regions elects seven additional members, in addition to the ten constituency MSPs, to produce a form of proportional representation for the region as a whole. Ruth Maguire
Ruth Bernadette Maguire is a Scottish National Party (SNP) politician who has been the Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Cunninghame South since the 2016 Scottish Parliament election. Maguire was elected as a councillor for North Ayrshire Council in 2012, in the Irvine West ward. She resigned as a councillor following her election to parliament. She was re-elected in 2021. Shortly before the 2021 election, Maguire was diagnosed with stage 3 cervical cancer. After taking medical leave and successful treatment, she returned to Holyrood in December 2021.
